iTunes Problem Loading

I've had a problem with iTunes for the last few months now. When I go to open the program, it takes forever (I'm not exaggerating - it takes hours) and a box pops up saying: "Checking iTunes Library" that just loads forever.

Sometimes after hours it opens, but most of the time it fails and the dreaded "iTunes has had to unexpectedly close" box comes up.

This happened me a while back and the problem seemed to fix itself, so I ignored it...

Anyone have any ideas what I can do? Anyone else have this problem? I saw a couple on other forums, but no real answer

Have you tried to uninstall/reinstall iTunes?

Hmm, when's the last time you ran a defrag on your machine?

I'd do a bit of 'housekeeping'. Download and run ccleaner to clear out any temp files that are sitting there and taking up space on your machine. Also make sure you run the Registry Cleaner part of that program too.

I'd recommend installing mydefrag or defraggler and letting that run its course.

I've defragged and run virus scans, cleaned the hell of the reg and no help.

I still haven't fixed the problem, but I now find that it tends to open ok when I connect my iPod to the computer. I tested it today and it was doing the usual "Checking iTunes Library" and then failing to open, then "Checking iTunes Library" again. When I plugged in my iPod it opened fine within minutes...

I would suspect a few different possibilities here.

It could indicate problems with the hard drive so I would run a diagnostic on it just to rule it out. either chkdsk or a manufacturers diagnostic.

Where are all of your tracks located.

Have you tried to consolidate your library (Not 100% this can still be done with the latest versions of itunes), it basically copies your music into the itunes folder in your music folder.

Since itunes works best when your ipod is connected its possible you have your ipod enabled as a disk and some music that itunes accesses stored on it.

Have a look at this link it will copy music so make sure your hard drive has plenty of space and doesn't fill up once its done.:

Right. I had given up on iTunes and was using MediaMonkey for a while. Decent program, I like it a lot, but I missed a lot of the functions that iTunes had, so gave it another shot. Noticed that Last.fm's scrobbler popped up as starting up everytime I opened iTunes and figured it could be a faulty external script that was causing iTunes to freak out.

Uninstalled Last.fm and low and behold, iTunes loads up now within a matter of seconds!! Hallelujah! :D

Just thought I'd mention my solution in case it helps anyone else.

    Thanks for all the suggestions

I had had this problem for months and have finally found the solution that has worked for me. So this is what I did and no more problems.

    - In itunes select Store/Turn Off Genius.
    - Close itunes.
    - Got to the itunes folder and delete the 'iTunes Library Genius' .itdb file. On my pc the file was located here: Music\iTunes Library Genius

    Sorted!
