How much would it cost to buy a decent enough .22 break barrel air rifle for rats and rabbits etc?are they all single shots?i cant find any prices online. What sort of distances would you be able hit rats rabbits,to kill them cleanly?

For a .22 break barrel I would go for a HW80, I have an underlever HW77 in .177. I would be confident shooting out to 55 yards, you would want to be confident in hitting a 40mm target out to that kinda distance. For the same power .177 has a flatter trajectory but .22 packs more of a punch.
Expect to pay up to €400 or more for one.
You can get a lot cheaper but if you want a serious airgun without buying a precharged gun and dive bottle etc then I would buy a weihrauch.

    is your underlever single shot?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 119 ✭✭Liam_D

Yea most spring air rifles are single shot, I haven't seen many that are multishot except pcp guns. Tannyoky guns and ammo always had a good selection of airguns.

iwas looking at the pcp rifles but having to get dive bottles etc makes it very exspensive, are stirrup pumps anygood?iv seen them on amazon saying they are designed for filling .17 and .22 pcp airrifles

My favorites in air rifles has always been the Diana RWS series. Particularly, the side action 52 or the break action models.

Don't go cheap, as you will regret it later. Go hold one in your hand and see their design first hand.

I've never shot rats so can't comment but I have shot sveral hundred starlings in a night and it's reasonably quick to reload when you get into a rythm of working, especially if you keep your pellets in a pouch round your neck. My air rifle is 12ft/lbs as I was living in England for a while then brought it home with me. Diana are great rifles also I always wanted a 54 airking, they would put out 24ft/lbs if tuned properley. I had my airgun tuned my Steve pope of webley venom (now v-mach) and I would expect it to need a service every couple of thousand pellets but the spring should last for years if not the life of the gun, stay away from ox mainsprings they're not all they're hyped up to be.

Hi Bazza888. Just bought an air arms s410. Was told by experienced air gunner that they are fairly good. Never had air rifle before, was more of a shotgun man myself.

    hi guys,
Do secondhand air rifles come with potential issues e.g wear/noise? or are they good for thousands of shots. who carrys a good stock of air rifles both new and s/h? thinking diana / weilrauch (depending on weight)

Scopes - are the green illuminated scopes just a gimmick or are they a good peice of kit & are they just as good when daytime hunting and plinking? what makes are they ? thinking of ratting.

What else would u buy to hang off your rifle for a greeaaat set-up from the start??
    cheers........cc30

Well according to this place starlings have been protected for 30 years in the UK and at least 10 years in ROI ...... ?

All wild birds are protected by law but some can be shot under licence, starlings were removed from the general licence in England in 2005 (5 years ago) and according to the link below I'm legally entitled to shoot them where I live for the foreseeable future.

I have one gamo viper love it, range 35-40yrd max maybe a tad longer with rats

Edit. Springer can be very hard on scopes, I use the sights now after going through 3 though one was faulty and I got a free replacement for that but it still went on me. This was at the time you could do target on private land so when I when out I could go through 300= pellets, so it was getting heavy use

I bought a BSA 22 air rifle a year ago cost €240 second hand. It had a 10 round magizine & scope. 250 gamo pellets for €6. Could easily dispose of crows at 50 yards on top of telegraph pole. Great fun for target practice. Must have shot 2 thousand rounds with it. I bought cheaper round once (500 for €6), not machined right and kept on leaving lead shaving in the chamber.
