Does anyone know if a suspended sentence is brings the same ramifications as a custodial sentence for example refusal of a travel visa?

Yup, it's still a conviction, your sentence was just suspended.

A one year suspended sentence may be looked at more benevolently than a one year custodial sentence. However, it will still be seen as a conviction. The exact circumstances are likely to be looked at and the reason for suspension (family obligations, preventative measure, supervision, etc.).

It will count equally as a served prison term with regards to a visa application for most countries.

This issue will be if the nature of the crime automatically prohibits entry.

Good point, in many cases the type of conviction e.g. road traffic offence vs. drugs is as or more important than the sentence or penalty handed down.

For example, a 100 euro fine for possession of cannabis could be more harmful in terms of blocking your entry to certain countries than a suspended sentence for dangerous driving.

    Indeed.

Also any sentences (suspended or otherwise) of 12 months or more will bar entry to many countries.
