O2 mobile broadband - problems with speed in last few days

My O2 broadband has been painfully slow for the past two days or more. Has anyone in Gorey / Wexford area had the same issue? Just wondering if there's something up with my laptop or it's a general issue. Thanks.

Maybe the weather is affecting it so. Hopefully it'll be sorted soon. It's head wrecking.

    This is normal Mobile
It can be very slow just with 5 or 6 new users

I have asked to be allowed to exit the O2 contract but they are insisting on charging me for a service that is not working. They will ask you to check your operating system (Windows, Mac OS etc) and maybe blame your modem.

None of these are factors in the issues. I have used my equipment with Three SIM cards no problem. Service is never above 0.15 Mbps and is unusable. It has been like this for quite a while now with no resolution or acknowledgement from O2. Be wary of their CS people feeding you crap to keep you at bay.

It is not the normal reliability issue associated with mobile broadband.

It's within the operating limits of Mobile Internet

If you get better you are fortunate. They don't have to do anything. That *IS* actually a normal working Mobile system.

Well within "working properly". Actually the "Ping" is very good for Mobile.

Even constant disconnections and inability to connect frequently is within operational limits. It's a Mobile Phone System
    See http://www.radioway.info/comparewireless/ for the truth.

But they were sold broadband, the first thing they need to do is mail customer.first@o2.ie ( that is the complaints department ) with subject Formal Complaint and point out it is not fit for the purpose _as broadband_ so either fix it pronto or terminate the contract. No point dealing with customer service, escalate.

Also ask for a rebate for the days it was unusable.

Also ask for the usage counter to be zeroed on each of those days.

EVERYONE on Mobile on all four Operators should get out of jail free then. None of it is Broadband. Sometimes it's a reasonable speed. That doesn't make it broadband.

Just to report that signal is falling back to EDGE all day today, with frequent disconnections. I usually always get WCDMA. Based in Longford. Watty's points on inconsistency and easy saturation of the service are valid, but this is much worse than usual. Maybe it's the weather.

The good ping times and a very consistent 0.15 Mbps would lead me to believe that there is some throttling system in place.

First rule: Switch your modem to "3G only", and you will be much happier. Really. Even with a marginal signal.

    Sometimes EDGE only is better
200Kbps vs 50kbps to 120kbps and disconnections. EDGE has no cell breathing. 3G does.

Not here. I don't know why, but when I switch my modem to EDGE (wich gives me full signal bars), I am not nearly getting the speed of 200 kbps you mention. Dial-up speeds at the very best, and certainly not consistent. Two different modems, same story.
Even on a signal of less then 10%, I am better off on the 3G-only setting. In a rural area, I should add, probably not much load on my mast (distance approx. 5 km).

Cell oversubscribed. Which doesn't take much.

Confirmed on O2's own forum as a widespread network issue. Please understand that people are comparing the service to the known limitations of mobile broadband. It is not reaching any performance levels expected of the technology even at off peak periods.

This is a serious network wide issue with their basic service and is aside from technological limitations. They are fobbing people off with lies regarding local masts to prevent contracts from being cancelled legitimately early.

Had to set modem to "edge (gsm) only" this evening, as there is absolutely nothing coming through when connected via WCDMA. At least I'm able to check the email and surf the boards atm, 56k dial-up style.
