LNB broken in avalanche

    Hi
I am new to this forum having lurked and gained many useful tips over the years.
I have a standard Sky box and dish but no subscription with sky and get on ly UK freeview through the box.

I was having breakfast yesterday morning when I heard and unmerciful whump:eek: which was the 1 foot deep snow sliding off my south facing roof. Glad I wasn't under it and thought no more about it. Last night no satellite feed. Had a quick look at the dish and it doesn't appear to have shifted but the LNB is hanging from a wire and not attached to the stem. Haven't been able to get a ladder to get up to it yet

    Couple of questions

Is it likely it just need to be pushed back onto the stem or is there likely to be structural damage.
if LNB is damaged where can I get one and what level of technical proficiency is necessary to replace it.

Would I be better to bite the bullet and call a service man (no sky Contract)

    Thanks in advance

At best it could have just popped out if the retaining pin wasn't put in place, so you could just put it back and secure it with a cable tie through the hole in the arm, check that the cable hasn't came loose as it was holding the lnb as it was hanging.
At worse, it may have snapped off and will need replacing, you can get a replacement easily enough (see the supplier sticky thread above ^^^)
You'll need to remove the piece that remains within the arm, can be tricky if the dish has been there a while and the retaining pin is in place.
You may need a realignment if the dish has been knocked off due to the force of the snow landing on it.

You'll know straight away by looking at it, if its broken off or not.
Let us know how you get on, and be careful on a ladder in this weather!!

if the the stem is broken off and 'stuck' in the arm, it might be better to take the arm off the dish (unbolt the 1 bolt), and then work out the broken piece. this will ensure that if the dish is still aligned you do not move it when struggling to dig out that broken piece of plastoc.

If you cant get the unbroken piece out of the arm which has happened to me on numerous occasions you can just cut off of all external plastic with cutters and knock the remaining piece down lower on the arm allowing room for the new lnb holder.

I chickened out with the ladder. There is 2+ feet of snow on the ground. Found a camera.

New lnb needed-it's one of those 'moulded' one piece jobs,it could be a bit of a pain getting the broken bit out considering the conditions and being up a ladder.Best to use a quad lnb as a replacement so it'l be futureproof if you intend to connect more boxes.

Thanks for that. I hope to put in a few extra boxes. Ill get one and wait until the snow thaws.

Looks like a Triax dish think they have an MTI type LNB on them. You might be as well to put up a new dish if you're upgrading your system it's starting to look a little rusty!
