Rodents chewing wires

My car refused to start yesterday. Mechanic had a look at it and reckons a mouse/rat has been chewing on wires and said that I'll have to take it to an auto electrician - looks like it will be expensive. Has anyone else experienced this and if so did your insurance cover it?

Where were the wires, in the engine bay or inside the car, i had a car before where RATS got into the boot tru the vents behind the rear bumper, customer replaced complete interior .

Oh god, I though this was an urban myth.

    How can you avoid this?
