Mineral Felt on Roof

I have 2 small extensions that I'm planning to get re-roofed at some stage. I was thinking of getting felt for them.
I've noticed on my house insurance form that there is a question that asks if any part of the roof is mineral felt - they ask to give a percentage here. I'm just wondering why they ask this in the first place. Would mineral felt be more of a fire hazard. I'd rather go with slates if that is the case.

No, the lifespan of mineral felt is approximately 10 years. The only way an average house user realises that the felt has failed is when the rain appears on a floor or through a ceiling or down a wall, which usually means a claim on the house insurance......hence the question.

That makes sense when you explain it like that. I don't know anything about these kind of things so say for instance I was getting a slated roof instead, is it felt they use underneath them, and if so, is it mineral felt. It would be good to know things like this in advance.

Mineral felt is like a very rough sandpaper and is greenish in colour. It is used on flat roofes traditionally.

So would there be another kind of felt for a roof that would last more than 10 years other than mineral felt. I would prefer to have a flat roof if possible but don't want to have to replace it in 10 years.

Yes, it's called 'torch-on' felt and has a life span of about 20 years.

Modern flat roofs are constructed in other materials from monoskins to complicated composites. If you need a specification on a flat roof finish that suites you own job get in touch with a good local AT who will advise you further.

Thank you for all your advice. It's great to have people like yourself on these forums. It just gives me a better idea of what to ask for when the time comes. So thanks again.
