The local motor factors has snow chains in stock but socks are unavailable until Wednesday. Should I invest or wait for the socks to come in? Are snow chains only suitable for v deep snow??

I'd say get the socks as when you drive from snow to tarmac spots...like in a tunnel or bridge, drive slowly or you'll break chains and road.

The only downside with socks is that you have to go slow but then again you do with chains too.

In short - socks for normal city/town but chains for mountains.
    Or get winter tyres.

    Imo.

I have winter tyres on the Defender and havent had a problem all week, not even one skid. Chains arent great for Ireland as you will almost certainly hit tarmac at some point.

    Hi,

I live in Wicklow near Greystones but a little off the main drag. Always major problems trying to get to the main road in snow. Used to have chains but they were a nuisance so I bought Weiss socks this week to try them out.

On snow and ice brilliant like having a 4x4. Cost €77 in Fast Fit.

Plus side easy to fitand work really well in the snow especially going uphill, down side when you get to main roads you need to take them off as I have worn out a set already and its only day 2.

Covered 40 miles, Great in the back roads on snow and icey roads but when I got to N11, it was cleared and no place to pull over as hard shoulder was a bank of snow. Stayed on N11 at 30mph and covered about 30 miles on gritted roads on a return journey. Disappointed but not surprised as they wore through and are in shreds. Really only an emergency kit. Careful when buying as the distance between the wheel arch and the tyre can make it difficult to fit, if you can't get your hands into wheel arch.

Pity the material is not reinforced with a metal thread or something more durable.

Unfortunately people dont listen ...Day 2 and socks gone, if winter lasts another 3-4-8 weeks, how many pairs do you need them ?

Winter tyres ALL THE WAY and you drive like you normally do, no hassle to put chains or socks on and off 6-8 times a day , no worries they worn out even when driving safely 120km/h on a motorway.

People do think that they saving money buying socks or chains, same time they dont think they cant do over 30km/h with them and they cant drive on a slippy motorway on them. So ask yourselves, whats the point of them in irish climate wheres very little snow but lots of icey tarmac.

Do you really save money buying them ?

For an average person who doesnt live in mountains wheres 8+ inches snow, the chains are totally useless, socks ... Well, pair for the week if even that amd lots of hassle puting them on and off, good luck ...

Just saw the best thing ever and aparently very good as I asked the driver.

Blue rope tied, very tightly around the tyres.

Its threaded in and out between the spokes of the alloy wheels.

Each piece is separate in case one snaps. Looked well

Not aesthetically, no, but as a solution it looked like it would do the job as well as socks
