Does anyone know if there is legislation that requires compulsory insurance for construction vehicles (teleporters, etc.) as there is for passenger vehicles?

I've been looking everywhere and can't seem to find any mention of it... but that doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't exist!:D

If it's a mechanically propelled vehicle, and its operating in a public place, s. 56 RTA kicks in to require insurance.

My understanding is that any construction vehicles operating on public roads need to be taxed and insured, with discs for both and a number plate displayed - just like any other car etc. Fleet insurance may well cover the machines in this instance.

On a private jobsite, as long as the operator of the machine is qualified to operate it, and has the relevant machine "ticket", the contractors insurance (main or sub) should indemnify the operator against damage caused. I would check the policy, but a general main contractor PI and PL policy should include this.

Employers Liability and Contractors All Risks may also be an issue.

Victor, you make a good point.

Depending on the Main Contractors line of business machine operation maight not be included.

Usually though, if the main contractors business is for example, home construction, site preparation, trench digging etc his insurance policy would have clauses that would cover the operation of machines.

Any reputable contractor should provide you with a copy of his/her insurance policy before any contract is signed. The good ones will bring a copy with them when they first meet the client to discuss the project, even before they bid.
