We're back to 5/6 days supply of blood stores.

    http://www.giveblood.ie/Current_Blood_Supply/

Time for people to get out and give again.

I've just read they've extended the opening hours in D'olier Street for donations.

I can't give for another two months, but please, if you can do!

i agree -- dosent matter if a regular donor or not -- give an hour of your time -- help someone that needs it in a bad way
if a regular donor please make an effort please:D

Do they still refuse to take blood from people who have acupuncture?

It's silly really if this is still the case, as new, sterile needles are used every session.

    From: www.giveblood.ie
Acupuncture - I have just had acupuncture. Can I give blood?
Yes, you can be accepted to give blood while having acupuncture provided the acupuncture has been performed by:

    a) a Medical Practitioner registered with the Irish Medical Council
    b) by a registered General Nurse registered with An Bord Altranais working for a Medical Practitioner registered with the Irish Medical Council or
    c) by a Chartered Physiotherapist registered with the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists.

I know I'm stating the obvious here.....you're saying you actually can get acupuncture but only from someone who's main vocation is a doctor, a nurse or a physiotherapist. But not someone who specialises in just acupuncture. Ridiculous!

Not silly at all. I dealt with an outbreak of a blood borne virus not so long ago, which started at an acupuncturist.

And your proof of this is?

Even if this is true, do you think this occurs regularly enough to prohibit 100's if not 1000's of healthy adults from donating blood? Seems a bit over the top to me as acupuncturists here in ireland always use fresh needles each session, as anyone who gets acupuncture here will tell you!

Look at all the cock ups the HSE has made in the past wrt infected blood! Anyone for some hepatitis?!

Fact remains that Irish blood supplies are one of the safest blood supplies in the world and this is because of all the restrictions placed on it.

Without going into details, the proof is the exact same genetic strain of the virus in each patient who got the illness, and their only link was acupuncture in the same place.

There's also a cohort of patients who have no risk factors for HIV except acupuncture.

But it's not just blood borne viruses where people fall ill. There's been a few cases of nec fasc from improper cleaning of the injection sites aswell. The guys in Hong Kong who do a bulk of the work on this will tell you that the cases we know about are only the tip of the iceberg.

It's risk Vs benefit. One infected donor could screw up a lot of people's lives, so I think it's reasonable.

I'm guessing the problem is that I can set up shop tomorrow and call myself an acupuncturist and just start poking people.

I can't donate for another two months, but I got a lot of my friends to go out and donate!

Please donate if you can! It only takes a short amount of time and it makes a huge difference!

Very interesting tallaght, would never have even imagined it was so common. But I do think that the person getting the treatment must show a little common sense too! I'd never have a treatment unless I knew for a fact that the needles were sterile. But I suppose if everyone had common sense, the world wouldn't be half as screwed up as it is. Thanks for sharing, it's something I'm going to look at in detail! If you have any links to the relevant research, they would be very much appreciated!
