Anybody got any suggestions for places to go for a weekend skiing or even a few days during the week?

Somewhere you could just up and leave with a weeks notice.

    All suggestions welcome

I booked Obersdorf last week flights with Ryanair to Memmingen on 10th Jan returning 14th including baggage were €80 return each - accomodation apartment in the centre of town 500M from train station €300 and the return train and bus journey for two of us is €56 - ski passes are reasonable too - see www.obsersdorf.de, its in German but google will translate for you. I have not been there before so cant comment on what it is like but from reports I have had to date its supposed to be pretty good

Chamrousse is a very handy transfer from Grenoble and a great weekend's skiing.

Andermatt is on a direct train line from Zurich and amazing steep and off-piste skiing.

Les Arcs is right above Bourg St Maurice, which provides fast TGV access from Paris.

Chamonix is only a 1 hour transfer from Geneva
    &
Kitzbuhel is 1hr 20mins on the train from Munich
Both are good, if I had to choose, prob go for Kitzbuhel

Done several times. Early AM flight to Munich & rent a car for €30/day. This puts you within 2 hours of hundreds of resorts in Austria. Take you pick and head off where the snow is and be ski-ing by lunchtime!:D

Make sure rental has snow tyres as it is the law in Germany/Aus from Nov to April. Plus if you are travelling any distance on Autobahn in Austrian make sure to stop & get €12 vingette. These are available at all service stops on way. If the feds stop you on Autobahn without it, you'll pay a hefty fine. Or else stay off motorways.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Try Aviemore, in the Scottish highlands.

Late April 2010 - I drove from Dublin to Belfast - took the ferry from Lorne to Stranraer - Drove 4hrs30mins to Aviemore - Hit the Cairngorm mountains and had a great laugh for 3days... stayed in a self catering Chalet/Cabin in Aviemore with a big Tesco down the road... Would recommend for a group weekend - rent a bus share driving and costs!

    http://www.cairngormmountain.co.uk/snow-sports

I'm off again next weekend (1st April 2011)- the slopes are good with a nice mix of blues, reds and easy Blacks - all lifts currently open - there is also a small snow park and some moguls - £30/day ski pass with a train from the car park to top of mountain - can board/ski all the way back down - the only negative is button and Tbar lifts and the price of petrol aint getting cheaper.

There used to be flights form Dublin to Inverness (only 1hr away from Aviemore) where you could rent a car. This method is still possible from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen could also get train.

Aviemore has loads of other cool outdoor activities too for those not to keen on the snowsports.

Hope this is of interst to someone

Would there actually be good snow this late in the season?

Yea the snow is still good... it is melting around the bottom of mountain but good cover around the top half... was on skype to a scottish mate to confirm.

It was melting last year at the very end of April but i still boarded all the way to car park. Although, it was a freak season! they also have a few snow machines and groom the slopes a lot better than a few years ago.

Case in point... Vans Dawn of the Shred 5 Snowboard Competition returns to CairnGorm on Saturday 9th April. See some photos from last year below...

If your ok with button and Tbar lifts it is a good alternative to flying to europe with transfers + the extra €60/80 charge when bringing your own equipment, etc...

Must metion... the local Scottish 'Highlanders' are buzzers... they love the apres Ski!

You'll get great snow in the higher resorts well into May. Just make sure you have a way to get down from the middle station, or you could ruin a fabulous day's skiing on the upper runs by having to ski mud back to the resort.
