    Hi There.

I have an factory unlocked iphone 3gs 32gb out of warranty by 40 days or so and the phone wont come out of restore mode.

I tried all the various software out there(blackrain, likera1n etc) but still not working. I took it to a local apple dealer in Galway and they cant fix it.

I rang apple customer care and they will charge me ¢211to get it repaired.

The thing is it just crashed a couple of days after I had downloaded the latest software update from itunes 10.

Just wondering do I have a case so that apple will fix for free?

Has anyone else been in this situation?

The phone is just over a year old and I bought it myself unaffiliated to any mbl phone operator.

I have a corporate contract with vodafone so cant tinker or get upgrades etc. I use the vodafone sim in the iphone.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

download tinyumbrella or recboot. both have options to kick the phone out of recovery mode

Would you buy AppleCare and get a replacement phone. AppleCare would cost about 65 euro

    Thanks for replies so far.

Ach I tried tinyumbrella and no joy. I had a lad who fixes the damn things looking at it for 4 hrs.....no joy.

Have'nt tried recboot tho. Will give a lash when I pick up phone tmrw. I think its a harddrive issue.

I would buy applecare, but can you retro buy if warranty ran out?

Does it restore? or does it give you a 1611 error?

    It gives me error 1002.

Restore gets right to the end and then hangs and error 1002 message comes up.

I'm not techy, so not sure about the technical solutions mentioned...

... however, if you plead your case to Apple they may be willing to repair under warranty as an exception.... Apple are like any other commercial organisation... they know it's a lot more expensive to win back a dissatisfied customer than it is to retain an existing one. Just tell them how wonderful you think their products are & that you’ll probably only be able to afford a Nokia or Samsung if your iPhone isn’t repairable under warranty!

Was talking to a chap on Apple Customer Care and no dice. They did'nt want to know. Hand over ¢211 and then we can do something for you.

I will try an apple store in Dublin to see what they say.

Thats CompuB, not Apple. They will give you the same story. Did you Google 1002 error? There is a ton of requests and solutions there. I have a similar problem on mine sometimes, but when I do it on my other computer it works fine. There seems to be some corruption of a file on the computer that stops the restore.

other alternative is Small Claims Court. A phone costing €4-500 should be expected to last more than 13 months.

Is the 1002 not a baseband issue? Ie the baseband cannot be updated Or is that 1004??

open tinyUmbrella, go to advanced options tab, and make sure "Edit Host File" is disabled,

open the host file, as be sure it has its original text (ie doesnt point to saurik/cydia server)
    ##
    # Host Database
    #
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting. *Do not change this entry.
    ##
    127.0.0.1 * * * localhost
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost

are you stuck with apple logo, or have you a picture saying plug into itunes

you want the latter and you can force it by putting phone into dfu mode

then restore....say a prayer ! no reason why you cant get it to restore,

Its saying plug into itunes. I'll try it. Just tried recboot and no joy.

I also tried it on another computer ie a pc even tho its mac configured and no joy there.

    Thanks for all the help.

Well, at least its not a general hardware failure, but I think it could be the baseband chip.

A friend of mine had an iphone that fell down the toilet and it gave me an 1002, finally managed to get it working again through multiple activation systems, i think it was quickpwn at the time. anyway, even though the phone was activated it couldn't pick up a network at all.
