Bad reputation as the following apocalyptic themed posts will tell you but I'd have no issue buying one. In fact I almost did before I bought my Xantia but when I did a HPI check that showed a mileage discrepancy which the seller only then put his hands up too and said the clocks had been changed, which wouldnt have been an issue if he had been upfront but I'd say he wa just hopeing he'd get a buyer that wouldnt check.

I like them a lot and a well loooked after one with a service history , at 9 years old shoudlnt have many surprises. Any of the common issues with them would have well reared their heads in the first 9 years so if everythign works it means they were fixed or never broke in the first place, indicatign a good one. I know a couple of people running them trouble free.

I'm just gonna say it and yes I know I'll be taunted by others who disagree.

From EXPERIENCE by myself and others I would RUN AWAY from a pre 2006 Renault.

Others will tell you that "them ders Renaults are just grate" however the problems which they give, and you will be lucky not to have one, are expensive and complicated to put right.

Just for an idea, my best mates one had 2 ecu's, 3 (all 4) coil packs, brake problem, erroneous warning lights, leaks, running issues (literally the electronics start to shut down one by one until the car dies) and has replaced all window regulators. All that in 12 months of ownership.

It was bought from a main dealer with a full service history and no previous warranty claims and only 32k miles

I've heard of turbo failure on diesels and gearbox issues across the range.

Yes they are very cheap to buy, nice to sit in and very comfy to drive but all that comfort is little compensation while you are sitting at the side of the road wondering why it won't start this time.

    Budget?

I would recommend an old diesel Pug but that may not suit you, 306/406.

I find the petrols a little weak as they age

Budget and requirements would be handy

Buy a Volvo S40 mk1 and you can tell your sister that it has a Renault gearbox:) (Worst part of the car actually)

One of the best, cheap cars in the market. Much better than Laguna II. I am not sure about Laguna I, I have heard even something positive about it.

Other french cars to consider, Renault Clio seem to have a good reputation.

She wont drive a Volvo, she thinks their for old men... I would not really agree with her though:)

With the budget I imagine you are looking for a reliable cheap family car yes?

Then I would leave age out of it and get the best condition and reliable car you can get.

Newer cars may be cheap but they can cost a lot to run

I'm owner of the Laguna 2001. 1.6 16V Estate. I've bought it in 2009 with 55000 M. I had to do a few things of course after a bought it but it's normal. It's very comfortable car and I'm very satisfied with this car .

I had an 02 Renault Scenic!!

Junker, set itself on fire on Christmas eve along with all the kids presents, had a host of electrical faults before that(pretty much a new one every week) and only had 50K on the clock.
Id have the newest Mazda 323 that 2K could get me.

buying a 01 reno laguna is idiocy, you may as well open your winter stove and throw 2 grand inside it....

    some people...:confused::confused:

there are a million and one better cars to get for that money in that year

a honda accord for instance is at least 20000% better than one...

I could practically bet if you picked up any accord and drove it away with no check up it would still outperform (longetivity/money wise) a laguna that was nct'd or 'looked' good.

Bought a '02 1.9 diesel Laguna last year with 78k on the clock. Sold it in Sept with 131k on the clock (only sold it as we needed something better for towing a large caravan).

    Bar servicing, in the 18ish months we had it we had to fix/replace;

    1 set of glow plugs @ 85k
    1 foglight (stone damage)
    Drivers front window regulator
    Passenger front window regulator
    Rear axle bushes @ 85k
All 4 wheels (car was fitted with the 17" Silverstone alloys which are renouned for being too soft for Irish roads/potholes - after getting 6 buckles repaired I fitted a stronger set of 18's off a Mondeo and covered 15k with no further buckles on the same roads).
Tyre pressure monitor turned off when new wheels fitted

To be honest, given the mileage I covered and the way I drove it, I think it stood up exceptionally well. My father is on his 4th or 5th Laguna now (he changes them shortly before they're due timing belt change :D ) and he's never had any issues bar the tyre pressure sensors on his first Mk2 Laguna.

At the end of the day its pot-luck really - though I know if it wasn't for our needs changing that I'd probably still have our one outside the house right now as it served us well.

Just my 2c to balance things a little ;)
