If you move to Meteor, and buy a phone, you get €240 (12 x €20) free credit next year.
Just top up by €20 every month, and you'll get €20 free credit the following month: http://www.meteor.ie/plans/pay_as_you_go/move_to_meteor/

I'd like to see all contract ads (inc. SKY and boradband) to state clearly the minimum cost AND also use say X for the price of Y instead of FREE

This should in all honesty be advertised as - Get EU average price

Check your phone calls - everyone is the cheapest for certain profiles

If you make a lot of calls to one network then consider changing to it as most offer much cheaper calls within the same network. For Vodafone prepay €20 gets you vodafone to vodafone free and either free vodafone to vodafone texts or land line calls.

It might even be cheaper having two phones on the most popular networks to benefit of the free calls, just remember to let everyone know which one to call you on so they can save call charges too.

Cheapest is probably chruning to a new network every year unlocking and selling the discounted phone, maybe even selling the new sim and it's credit ?

[insert rant about how being a loyal customer for a network means you get less than changing network every year and then the networks wonder how they can't keep customers]

[insert rant about how in the first year you pay back the subsidy on the 'free' phone and every year after that it's profit-ville for the mobile phone company]

As far as I know, you can carry this credit forward because it's a PAYG deal, not Billpay. If you only spent/used €20 per month anyway, with this deal, you'd have an extra €240 credit at the end of the year.

Tesco Mobile offer a similar deal, but it's better, because you get the free credit straight away, not the following month, and it's given from €10 top up. Although you can't carry the free credit forward, it expires after 30 days. It's obvious this deal is to compete with them. I won't be moving from Tesco Mobile but this deal might suit some people,

Any particular reason? I have been with them for more than five years and think they provide an excellent service.

The Title of this thread is a little bit misleading.
You Do Not Have To Buy A New Phone To get this offer.
I simply walked into the shop and changed over.
It's a fantastic offer with no cons and great customer service from Meteor.

Oracle, I have to disagree with you on this one.
I was a loyal Tesco Mobile Customer for over two years and had to switch due to Their Crap Customer Service.
I topped up by €20 and as well as getting €20 free credit I was getting free calls and texts to the gf as she was also on Tesco Mobile.
During this month I ran out of credit as I made a lot of calls. I topped up again and rather unexpectedly the call credit disappeared.
I was ringing the gf and received a message saying that I hadn't enough credit to make the call.
I rang them up and they said that I wasn't allowed to top up twice in the one month. What a rather weird rule. I get punished for topping up.
The guy on Customer Service offered me 1000 Club Card points.
I just laughed at him and said no thanks, I will move to Meteor.

vodafone were in the college a few weeks ago offering a free phone and the same credit offer as meteor. The phone was pretty basic I think though.

Thanks, I thought that could be done, so I've changed the thread title. I put "buy a phone" in the title because the Meteor web site says: "Simply choose a brand new phone in our online store.".

Regarding Tesco Mobile sorry for your trouble RadioFreak. It does seem strange that you can only top-up once in a month. Maybe you should have topped up by €30, and got €30 free credit, instead of €20. I've never had a problem with their customer service. I'd agree Tesco Mobile's great if you get your partner/friends on as well, it's great value. Although this offer is good, with Meteor you're paying 29c per minute for calls and 12c for texts, with Tesco its 20c per min for calls and 9c for texts.

P.S. Sorry can't change the thread title. :(

Oracle, When I topped up by €20 I didn't realise that I would have to make so many calls that month. If I knew that I would of topped up by €30.
Yes, I know that Tesco Mobile sounds cheap at only 20c a minute but you still get charged 20c if you just speak for 1 second or if you go straight to voicemail. Meteor only charge 5c for a connection fee.
And because I top up by €20 on Meteor I can get free texts to Any Network.

3 actually have the best phones and great coverage. But their customer service is crap with a very big language barrier.

Oracle, With Tesco Mobile you can carry The Free Credit Forward.
Just as long as you top up on the 30th day.
Try it. It works. After a year with them I had over €100 in free credit unused.

If everyone changed to meteor the world would be a better place.
Free calls and texts to meteor for 20 squids a month!

And then if you change over ya get another €240 on top of that!

i was with meteor for 5 years as well but changed to the 3 network 5 months ago because meteors reception is crap i cant get no reception apart from one spot in my house but get nearly full reception outside and it gets a pain in the hole to keep going out side to receive or make a call and i should not have to do that if a mobile phone company wants to keep my costume

i moved to 3 with out a problem the reception is a lot better than meteor i get free weekend calls and free any free any time any network texts plus €10 free credit for €20per month
meteor was giving me either free meteor to meteor calls or free any network texts and siht reception for my €20 per month

Hey, great, thanks for the tip, I'll try that next time, cheers.:)
Has anyone ordered the free Meteor SIM with 150 free texts per month and got the €240 free credit? :D

There's a couple of workarounds for the Tesco Mobile 20c connection fee and voicemail charges, not perfect though:
    1) Arrange a "buzz and callback" system with partner/friend/spouse. For example, you dial the person you know has free calls and hangup, they see your number and call or text you back.
    2) For this to work don't set-up voicemail, let the phone ring and use caller display to return calls.

The big issue I'd have with this offer- is other than outside the major cities and towns, Meteor's reception is very hit and miss- especially in comparison to almost any of the other networks. If you ever plan on visiting anywhere with a low population density (think the Northwest in general, but also random spots around the country- like most of the M7 for example), or are in a hilly or mountainous area- trying to use Meteor is the ultimate exercise in frustration. My little sister has to climb up a local hill outside Achonry, towards Tubercurry in Sligo- to make or receive calls (whereas my Vodafone phone and my Mum's o2 work fine there).......
