I saw a post on twitter saying that. Finding it hard to believe but there are photos of a driver digging the front of his tram free on the Red line so you never know. The website says
16:00 hrs The Luas Green Line operating Sandyford to Brides Glen. There are delays from St Stephens Green to Sandyford due a technical fault at Milltown. This technical fault is being worked on and passengers should check back at 16:30 for further information.

Just had a call from my dad who was on it.

Apparently the LUAS isn't immune to snow after all.

I got the Red Line Luas at 3:40 from Georges Dock, it got as far as the Museum when the driver told us there was be a problem with a tram ahead of us. He said we'd be delayed for 5 minutes, about 20 minutes later he came back on saying everyone has to leave the tram immediately as it wasn't going any further. People were asking him what was the problem and had he any idea if they's be back running anytime soon, he just shrugged his shoulders and said your better off just walking.

There were people with young kids who were left to walk in awful conditions, the worst thing is it seems they resumed very, very soon after. There was no mention of this delay on the Luas site. People were left to walk, most unaware that they could be resuming later. I can't see how he could tell so many people to walk home. I live in Tallaght so it have been a hell of a walk, forunately I'd a relation working nearby who was able to give me a lift home.

I'm also guessing that everybodies ticket price will not be refunded, the tram was jammed to capacity at the time.

I just walked from from town along the green line to Balally. Three trams passed heading to Sandyford. None going back into town while I was on the tracks.

It might have been kids at the start, but the lines are completely iced up now, after walking from Sandyford to Beechwood. Some Luases went by, but one or two had to be abandoned. Will only get worse.

I'm sure you can order one for the trams, but it's hardly something you'd spec for Ireland based on normal weather patterns.

well so far this year we are looking at 1 month of this weather, assuming it clears up sometime next week, last year was a bit less but still a few weeks. its starting to get into the territory where stuff like this will be needed.

Surely there are trucks that run on the rails that could cheaply and easily be modified to accept plows in future. Better solution than mounting them on lots of trams

They built a small wall of snow across the road near here earlier ... on a downhill slope. I nearly had a serious accident avoiding it.

I'd like to know how the hell they worked so fast - aren't the trams ~10/hour at peak times?

A plough won't help as the Luas tracks are set down into the ground at road and station surfaces and there is a danger that ice if hardened could lead to a derailment. The platforms were also covered in snow yesterday and this morning; Lord knows how safe they'd be tonight.

Easy, roll 3 big snowballs beside the tracks and wait for a tram to pass. You've now got 6-10 mins to place them one on top of each other.

    Simples! :)

Reckont this be back in the morning as per the website? I've no other way too work really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,390 ✭✭✭markpb

    The website says
We apologise for this inconvenience. The reason for this is due to the snow levels on Luas tracks and the tram failures that are occuring as a result. We intend to have a full service from 5:30am tomorrow morning, weather permitting.
so I guess it depends on how much snow we get over night.

Only problem is every little knacker will be out building snowmen on the line tonight.

I drove past about 7 luas's (luai?) parked up on Davitt road at about 4:40. Loads of people getting off and walking.

I assume they'll be out overnight ploughing the lines and clearing the points so the kids will find their creations gone by morning.
