    Hello All,
I am applying for the Psychology Degree in Maynooth next year and I have already attended their information session. I had intended to go to their open day today on Saturday 27/11/2010 but due to the bad weather and treacherous road conditions I could not make it. I was hoping to sit in on their Psychology lecture also.
I am interested to hear from anyone who attended who could give me an insight into how it was? What went on there?
Did anyone sit in on the Psychology lecture? How was it?
Will I get another chance to do what I had intended?
Has anyone done the Psychology Degree here in NUI Maynooth? What was your experience?
I much appreciate everyone's input here.
Thanking you for sharing in advance,
    Peter.

I just figured I'd give a wee input since I'm a first year in Psychology here, and I went to the open day last year?
Well if you know you want to do Psychology, then there's not really too much need for the Open Day talk, it doesn't really go through anymore than the Prospectus tbh. =P
If you're hoping to do it as your degree, study like hell this year and get into MH106 or MH209, else.. like me this year you'll be stuck fighting for a place.

Be ready for quite a bit of Sciency stuff and Statistics for the first while.. I know a few people who didn't realise how much science stuff was in Psychology at all, like it's not really hard stuff, just a shock to the system if you're not expecting it.. And for the first term.. we've been doing a LOT of stats, which.. though important can be very boring.

Most of all, good luck and God's speed, and Maynooth is the way to go, it's a really nice college to be in

Although I wasn't at the talk.... I finished my degree in maynooth last year and was volunteering at the psych stand answering questions on Saturday :D I'd wager 50% of the talk was talking about how Freud is not psychology, and the other 50% spent on talking about how psychology is a science :P

Don't think there's any more Open Day type talks, but you can send me any questions you might have and I'll try to answer them :)

Anyway, as I said I did the degree here through MH106, graduated a few months ago... now a postgrad in the department ^.^ I love the department, all the staff are enthusiastic about research and teaching and all very approachable (despite first impressions perhaps....). As people say... there is some stats, tbh I never found it to be overwhelming, 1 of your 4 modules is stats and research design afaik, so it's not like you're doing stats all day every day. The workload in first year is very manageable, steps significantly in 2nd year, and then in 3rd yeah... you'll be busy :D

If you have a solid idea of what psychology is then I'd say go for it, if you think it's all sitting around and discussing your dreams etc.... then I'd suggest some further research :)
