....robbed from octane.ie, I just thought I'd post the comment below.

As we know, the cold knacker's the batteries, so starting can be difficult.

So, what if your car is electric...........hmmmmm.....who'd've thought of that, eh ?

"My boss is out in Kildare. -11 on the dash. 2010 Prius started fine but took 45 mins to warm up enough before it would select gear!"

45 mins to warm up ? eeek.

The battery in my 968 is in the back, and they're slow cranker's at the best of times. Hasn't let me down yet, but I have been half-expecting it too, as it's out all day at work. Didn't get above -4.5 today.

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Does the Prius not have a regular engine as well ? Like it's not a battery on four wheels only ?

Electric cars will have to have a heating system for cold climates anyway, so they'll probably use the likes of Webasto Thermotop aux heater found in diesel cars. Apart from diesel those can run on veggie oil so the happy owner can have a clear conscience.

The same heater can then be used to warm up the batteries.

That Prius warm up time sounds just a little bit excessive... The model is on sale in colder countries than Ireland, can't believe 45 minutes would be norm.

In Scandi countries people have heaters in their engines and there are outlets on hired parking spaces so you can plug car in overnight. It'll start heating the car an hour or so before you come out.
Works for all kind of cars so this is what I would have.

it's funny how cars behave on days like this. As my wife won't drive in it at all I have the choice of three cars in the morning.

my daily MK5 GTi (DSG) isn't the best. Its running on Eagle F1 tyres and even with no throttle I am getting wheelspin and trying to use the engine breaking is a nightmare, if the revs drops to much it drops a cog itself and can become erratic.

My E36 323 is a no no, especially as it's an Auto and the ABS and ASC don't work ... the engine is turning over no problem mind you.

The car of choice at the moment is the little SEAT ibiza, 1.2L with no ABS or TC. Turns over first time, heats up nice and quickly and seems to love the ice and snow.

currently my getting in and out to work car is a 1998 opel corsa 1.0 with a set of all weather snow trac tryes.....
    no abs or traction control...

starts everytime, very well behaved on the roads... and is getting up steep hills with 6 inches of snow, nicely.... I have gotten up hills where i ahve seen 4x4 fail ... :D

....I'm only quoting what the owner posted........

Yes the Prius does have an engine - but - iirc - it's transmission is electronic. If there's an issue with batteries/electronics in these temps (and there is...), then the engine can sit there all day and the car won't move......

I took it up as not 'heating' the cabin space, but the drive train, to get it to go somewhere.

Or, maybe his is just faulty.

I wouldn't buy a Prius to use it in this kind of weather (I wouldn't buy it at all anyway). The batteries go flat a lot earlier and may give a lot of trouble.

We have two cars at home - a 20-year old 124T Mercedes Diesel and a 17-year old 190D (Diesel as well). They both keep going very well in the current climate, I haven't noticed any problems so far. No electric issues either and both cars start half a turn of the key. So far so good ;).
