I don't think there's anyone doing 6 month contracts any more.

Its not cost affective to fill it though especially not with ADSL,
ADSL costs money to install, long contracts mean the ISP can make this money back.

Nearest you'll get is PAYG "Mobile Broadband"

I think you can order a standalone phone line and then order broadband by itself which would have a minimum contract of 6 months. But that's a somewhat pricey way to get broadband. Also I'm not sure if you can get a phoneline without a minimum contract anymore...

Only because they are cross-subsidizing by voice revenue. I don't think any Mobile operator makes any money from Data yet. 3 Ireland hasn't enough voice customers and has agressively sold data, so makes a loss.

So Mobile Internet, while rubbish quality, is very good value indeed.

If you want decent broadband, shared amongst several in a house, simply budget for a years worth and either pay in advance for year (some ISPs like this) or ensure you can pay off the remaining 6 months when you leave.

It could be worth while on Digiweb Metro or UPC Cable or other non-DSL real broadband with no €26 a month line rental.

when will we ever see eircom/vodafone et al sell just adsl on their fone lines with no line rental, lots of people have no need for the voice side of things

    will it ever happen?

eircom own all the lines, and get all the line rental. It's their decision to charge line rental, but Comreg that regulates the amount. Comreg has allowed eircom to do pretty much anything they want, which is why we now have the highest line rental for the poorest quality lines, and a very bad DSL take up.

In short, it'll never happen, unless eircom ceases to be in it's current form, and even then, why give up a cash cow?

just in response to the OP, chorus do a student package deal.

we got broadband installed, 30mb. 50 per month, and we got it for 12 months. since we proved we were students, we only have to pay for 8 months, and the other 4 months are free of charge. pretty handy since were all coming back in september.

We'd hardly get that for 6 months using of the same reason?

Was looking into getting the o2 hotspot with the student deal of €10 a month for a year which isn't too bad but 10gb limit isn't big enough for myself? Any other alternatives?

O2, and any other 3G provider, will never be s proper alternative. There simply aren't any 6 month options available.

Well mobile midband is still the same, pretty crap and no use as a fixed line replacement.
