    Hi

I started a course in Carlow IT in the academic year September 2005 in Business Studies did the whole 1st year and sat the end of year exams but failed miserably due to lack of interest in the course and enjoying the social side of college a little to much. I am looking at getting in to do a 4yr Undergraduate course in UL starting in September 2011 and I am just wondering will I qualify for paying the new Registration fees of 2,000 a year or will I be hit with the full fees due to the fact that I started an undergrad before but only did 1 year and never completed it.
any Info would be great. Thanks.

You would have to pay the full fees for year 1

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

you can be considered a 2nd chance student in relation to grants not fees

Tuition fees will be paid in respect of students who, having attended, but not completed, approved courses, and not obtain a qualification, are returning following a break of at least five years in order to pursue approved courses at same level in the 2010/11 academic year.

Got that piece of Info off one of the college websites so thats what I was going on maybe its incorrect?

actually no, I think I was wrong it seems that it is correct as I just got the same info from various college websites. It is very specific about the same level though

It is also important to note the point made on St Pats Maynooths website
    Future contributions from Students
Please note that the information that follows is specific to 2010/2011 only. In the event of a Government decision to introduce a new form of student contribution from a future point in time, any such arrangements are liable to apply, from that time, to students who enter higher education this year. i.e. Incoming 2009 students would be liable for a new form of charge in their second year of studies.

So yes there is such a thing as second chance students being eligible for free tuition fees at the same level course - however this could change for 2011/2012 and they might abolish it!

no you wont have to pay full fees
i started college in 2004 and dropped out under similar circumstances
and i am back in 1st year this year 2010 as a mature student
and i was regarded as a second chance student so i payed 1500e reg fee

    hope that helps

i went from doing a science course in an It
    to an it course
if you are doing a different course it shouldn't matter

Just wanted to post regarding this, I still get confused of what I can apply for/What I have to pay etc.

I will be hopefully going back to study in 2012 as an Independent Second Chance Mature Student. I previously completed 2 years from a 4 year degree course (back in 2005/2006) but obviously in 2012 I want to do a different course. If I apply for the grant and get accepted what exactly will I have to pay? Will tuition be paid for but I will have to pay the registration fee?

    Thanks!

did you get your fee's paid the last time you were in college?

Yeah the two years were part of the free fees at the time (so paid about 800 or so euros a year at that time?)

U will be eligible for fees and tuition as a second chance student as u will be out of college for 5yrs in 2012 and u are re-entering at level 8. Best to check in July b4 u enter as the government are changing things every year. The new schemes come out in July.

So both the tuition fees and the registration fee are covered by the grant?

No. Tuition fees are covered by the free fees scheme (presuming it's still there) while the maintenance grant covers the reg fees and whatever your eligible for. Because you've been out of college for more than 5 years your basically in the same boat as anyone starting college for the first time and if you get the grant you won't pay for reg fees while tuition fees are free anyway. Make sense.

That's what the system has been up to now but if they bring in third level tuition fees or a loan system or whatever, you will obviously have to pay tuition fees then but the grants system may cover that by then depending on your circumstances.
