Honda Accord Diesel - Acceleration Problem

Hi, I have a 2.2 litre 2004 Honda Accord i-CTDI. Since the weather got cold, I noticed a problem with the acceleration. Once I hit 1500 revs in any gear, the power in the car seems to die and the car will not accelerate to a faster speed.

I have to drop a gear and accelerate up to 1500 again to build up speed. This never happened before. The coil light flashed on and off for a while but when I restarted the car, it disappeared.

Has anyone any experience of this issue?

Notice any extra whistle on boost?

Could be the MAF, or could be a boost leak/split pipe.

Or, as posted above, diesel gel, but since no one else is experiencing this, including me, I would discount that for now ;)

I had exactly the same problem with 05 Accord Diesel last winter. Replace fuel filter which sorted problem.

Hmmm, same same. I have a 05 cdti, glow plug light on, fault code P1237 coming up.

Googled it, said could be boost pressure, but I couldn't get any more info.

Mine went into limp home mode before but was ok after I left it off for a while.
Also cut out from time to time decellerating to a stop and sometimes idle drops and then kicks back up again with a little jolt.
Also loses power in accelleration intermittently and dropping to second gear sometimes.

Cleaned out EGR valve a while ago but no joy.

    Any ideas?

Thanks. It happened again this morning. Once I try to rev up past 1500 in 3rd gear, it just refuses to take on any more power and then the engine management light (the coil) immediately comes on. It sounds like the fuel isn't getting through properly so as "TheFat" mentioned above, the fuel filter could be the problem too.

I have had the oil filter changed a number of times during services but never the fuel filter - how often should this be changed?

I might try getting some of that additive too to see if it makes any difference. I presume most motor factor shops will stock it?

Also, not sure if this would make a difference but I usually buy diesel in a city station but on Tuesday, my wife filled it in a quiet country station where the diesel tanks would not be refilled as regularly.

Could this possible make a difference in relation to the Summer/Winter diesel mentioned in the thread posted above?

The fuel filter should be replaced at every 3rd service.
Water can build up in the filter...

    P1237 fault code:
The Honda shop manual says check for boost and vacuum leaks (incl. brake booster connections etc.) first.
Works case scenario is that the ECM is faulty.

    /QUOTE]

we always change the fuel filters every service, maybe it's money wasted but we run vehicles to very high mileage and seem to avoid a lot of fuel system problems i see on here

Paul, I heard an extra whistle this evening when accelerating just before the coil light came on. That sounds like the issue you described above?

Would it be a big job to fix it?

You've probably got a boost/vacuum leak or split pipe, happened on my old TDI before, and sounds like the exact same symptoms.

Have a feel around the pipes coming from the turbo and see if you can identify which one it is (if its an obvious one).
Otherwise you'll have to bring it to a mechanic and get him to have a look.

You'll need to order the pipe from honda anyway, don't think you'll get generic ones.

Mine was 80 quid, but mine was a VW, so prices may not be at all similar, should be a 20 min job for any decent mechanic.

Just an update on this issue. I took it to the mechanic I usually deal with - he said the problem was being caused by a build up of carbon before the EFG valve. That was then causing issues for the turbo.

He cleaned out as much of the carbon as he could and gave me a bottle of Diphenine (I think that was what it was called) to add to the fuel. He said to drive it pretty hard for a couple of weeks.

Since he did the job, the car is much better and I can now drive normally again. It is still a bit slow to kick on in the lower gears but it is slowly improving. Hopefully the car will be 100% again in a week or two.
