Sony X8 and GPS (No data charges?)

I got the Sony X8 recently, and I'm not sure if you can use the phone as a GPS without incurring data charges. My girlfriend has the Nokia 5230 and you can use GPS without connecting to the internet. Is there any way you can do this with the Sony X8? (It is currently operating on Android 1.6, but I understand Android 2.1…
