So they are at it again. PS workers with rigid union mindsets are refusing to use new fingerprinting/scanning technology in the department of immigration - as reported on 6:1 tonight

What part of flexibility don't these people know about.

Here is a great comparison with the private sector -- New computer technology is bought in and workers refuse to use it unless they get upgraded and salaries increased:

    Private Sector = P45

Public Sector = Work to rule you can't touch me I will get the union on you.

And you wonder why we come on here PS bashing - you don't deserve anything less

Define the "you" in "you don't deserve anything less"

There are probably 50 people involved in this bull****. But generalise away about everyone anyway.

In my job we take on new equipment and skills every week and don't whinge about it. We just get on with it an try to provide the best service possible.

The constant generalisations wear me down. We're back to that feckin half hour bank time again. A tiny percentage get it (stupidly) yet the "lazy feckin PS workers" posts mount up again

    ...........sigh

By the Dept of Immigration, I presume you mean the GNIB?

ha, what a joke, with our non EU immigration levels dropping, how much longer do those useless civil servants think they'll have that job?

Lets hope they are not farmed off to some other equally inefficient department, and instead get the wake up call they've been missing in the private sector.

I googled 'pratice' and it linked a typo in the 'Urban Dictionary' - it was very rude. 'Pratice' certainly didnt jump out at me in the CPA,to misquote our finance minister.

Your very fond of your broad brush westtip.

This is a CPSU issue and i think they are stone mad to be acting up over this fingerprint machine.

First of all, the dispute as reported on the 6-1 news is ridiculous and it is embarassing that so much money is being lost because of that work to rule. Some people in unions are criminally blinkered and they have not been taken on by the management in the public sector because it was easier to ignore these things and the lax attitude permeated the whole way to the top.

However, if you think these attitudes and practices are restricted to the Public Sector you are deluding yourself. I have worked in two Public Sector organisations and 3 Private Sector multinationals and there is a fair bit of union manipulation and beligerence in the Private Sector too. Admitedly this exact issue probably wouldnt have lasted as long in the Private Sector but, as Paulzx said, this would also not have happened in most areas of the Public Sector wither.

I know of and , anecdotedly have been told of, many situations in big Private Sector and also Semi-State companies that have developed crazy work practices over the years. Some upper level publicservants were given too much under benchmarking but all Public Servants have been subjected to the cuts even though they made committments based on the higher earnings which has been eroded and will continue to do so. Not as bad as losing you job of course but generalising from the instance is a bit ridiculous.

From the report on the news the machine is to be used to identify and reduce welfare fraud by cross-checking with other countries - it would be used for non EU nationals, so border towns will still have more claimants than population.

It also mentioned on the news that the CPSU got legal advice that they were not allowed to take prints. I have no idea of how the legal situtation/advice would change if they got paid more!

Here we go with the usual generalisations of the Public Sector we have all come to expect from those narrow minded posters on here.

The only justified generalisation is this: Everyone in the Public Sector has been cut by a huge percentage of their earnings V not everyone in the private sector have suffered cuts and job losses.

Infact their are those in the private sector who are enjoying huge bonuses and raises and Christmas parties funded by their wonderful and completly uncorrupt employers who no doubt pay every last bit of tax that they owe... Just like their colleagues in the public service.

Look at the poor down trodden private sector employees of Google:

"Full and part-time employees throughout the business are to get a 10 per cent increase in salary from January 1st, 2011. The company has also promised to pay staff a cash bonus this Christmas"

Thats all irrelevant though, Google can afford to pay its workers a bonus and a 10% payrise, the country however can't afford to pay the current PS Wagebill....

Great comparison with google, a massively profitable company (with very high caliber and ambitious employees) v Ireland Inc which is broke!

    I know.

I'm just sick of reading stupid posts that state the PS are immune to what's going on when infact it's fair to say that no one within the PS have not suffered hit after hit after hit. Whilst many private sector employees are untouched and even given pay rises.....

The tax payer pays my wages and so it's fair for them to dictate to me to a certain extent. But who do people thin pays the private sector wages???? The end user that's who... That means me and you at the end of the day. So what's reall different about who pays who after all??

I fully accept that exports and tourism are an exception to this rule of course but aside from this the high cost of living in this country funds sectors within the private sector which are still doing well because of our high cost of living while my wages are reduced....

True. A company that has done very well out of Broken Irelands Inc Corp Tax and highly skilled workforce... And so instead (or in addition) of paying it's employees a 10% raise should instead be ASKED to pay a 1% levy on it's turnover like all multi nationals here should be ASKED to pay.

They have done well out of us. The least they could do is give a little back.

Please read our charter regarding threads with the stated purpose of "bashing" and ranting, rather than the serious discussion of Irish Economy.
