Extending the warranty on your car... would you?

I drive an 06 X5 with about 42k miles on the clock. I bought the car almost 2 years ago and got a 2 year warranty with it. The warranty expires middle of this month and it will cost €500 from the same garage to extend it for another a year.

I rang Lumley direct but they say I have to go through a garage if I want to take out a warranty in Ireland and would not quote me.

Touching wood.... since I've had the car there hasn't been any problems.

Looking for peoples opinions about whether they would extend the warranty or not.

I've got a modern diesel and from what I've been reading about dual mass flywheels and diesel particulate filters I'll be looking at extending it for a couple of years once the warranty is up. Both of these would land you with a 1500 bill if they go tits up.

And Im not sure if an aftermarket warranty will cover any of them.

Those warrantys are steep but on something like an x5, I probably would buy it

Why specifically the X5? Are there known problems with them?
I thought the X5 was fairly solid with no major issues but I am thinking about extending the warranty just to be on the safe side.

No dmf on an x5. All are auto of that era surely. I asked a dealer at weekend about dmf cover on a car I was interested in and he said it's considered wear and tear. He couldn't give an answer on a dpf.

It's an expensive car with expensive repair bills. If you can afford the warranty and are happy that it is comprehensive enough go for it. If it was me I would for peace for mind and an easy life

I enquired about extending my warranty a few years ago when my manufacturer's warranty was about to expire. The salesman in the dealer where I bought the car told me that the extended warranty was basically an insurance policy, he said that the he (the dealer) would get a cut of the action, so would the broker who sold him the policy and obviously the insurance company writing the policy also had to make a profit so his advice was that because there was so many snouts in the trough that I shouldn't bother, it was bad value for money.

I'm glad to say that I kept the car for five years and it never gave me a minute's trouble so it was the right call. I can see however that for peace of mind it does makes sense, especially if there's a risk of a high value item going belly-up.
