Steering Wheel issue with GT5/PS3

I purchased a ps2 controller to usb connector to use with my old Fanatec Speedster 2 steering wheel and pedals (ps2). Loaded up GT5 and all was going well until the racing starts.
Wheel operates the options, scrolls through menus etc no problem but then its dead when i go to drive with it. If i press start while driving, the wheel/buttons work fine to select options etc so its just not letting me control the car in game (steering/acc/brake etc). any ideas?
Cant find options for standard steering wheels - there is a load of different wheels in the steering wheels options menu - does gt5 just not support any wheels outside of that list?
Didnt have time to test it with need for speed shift at lunch time but may try that later to see. really dont want to be forking out for a wheel and will probably just use the controller if it doesnt work.

This wont be much help at all, but I do use a converter for letting me use a ps1 dual shock pad on a ps3 (I built an arcade stick for fighting games and used the ps1 dual shock pad as the circuit board)

In fighting game land the big issue is input lag so the converter I bought had to be a good one, its known as the ipin ps2 to ps3 converter, had to order it from a guy in korea :p

Has the ps3 home button on it and the 4 red lights you'd get on a dual shock 3. Maybe, just maybe a better converter could fix your problem.

But I dunno, thats all I know. Its not much but I thought I'd say since no one else has replied yet.

I don't have a wheel so I dunno if it works for GT5.
