Thinking of buying either the c180 saloon or the c180/200 kompressor coupe. It'll be between 2002-2005. does anyone own either of these? were they decent or rubbish? I used to have an A class, and it was 50/50. let me know your stories guys!:)

My dad has a 2006 c180, has put 600000miles on it with one engine transplant. Most reliable car he has ever had.

At the moment I have four C180s.

03 C180 Kompressor elegance, 55k miles, for my own use. Have it since it was 18 mths old / 18k miles. Love it. The Kompressor is 1.8, 143bhp, 6-speed, does up to 45mpg on a long run. Had a couple of issues with it when I got it first but got them sorted under warranty (took a while because it was an import). Since then it got a carrier bearing on the driveshaft (approx 50 euro) and an indicator switch on top of the regular servicing. Would I buy another one ? ... definitely !

02 C180 2.0 (non-kompressor), has 127k miles, nct'ed it a few weeks ago, just failed for headlamp focus. Drives perfectly, spent about 250 euro on it to prepare for sale. No major problems.

00 C180 2.0 (older shape), 123k miles, again passed NCT with minimal expense.

00 C180 2.0 with 153k miles, running perfect and engine/box etc all good. We had to replace a few bushings on it for NCT. Cost about 600 euro to prepare ... not bad for a car with 153k miles.

No comparison between these and A-class. A-class is crap and very hard to work on, eg recommended way of replacing the starter is to take the engine out ! Mass airflow meter is part of ECU so if sensor fails you have to replace ECU. Very very expensive to maintain as a result.

On the C-class, 1.8 kompressor is better (but more expensive) than the 2.0 non-kompressor. The 2.0 has higher tax, less power, and worse fuel economy. Engine change was mid 02, but most Kompressors here are 03 onwards.

He actually doesnt have any loyalty program, which I always thought was a bit mental. Wish he'd stop though. He's a terrible driver! (Never indicates, hogs the outer lane with cruise control on, and he's been stopped several times on suspicion of drink driving, when he's so tired his driving gets so bad.)

I wouldn't say no to a c180.... I'd probably avoid the "classic" model as they come with hubcaps and windy rear windows. Still a nice car all the same even if it is a bog standard one.

    What should I be paying for a Mercedes C180, 2001 to 2003, 90,000 to 110,000 miles?

drove in my cousin's c180 kompressor (04 i think).. nice car, comfortable.

The only thing he complaint about was that the service from MB cost too much when things need changing..

If is car is 7 years old it's time to stop going to official MB service centres.
