Offered a training contract... Can I back out later?

Just wondering if anyone has been in or knows of anyone who has been in this situation.

I was offered a training contract with one of the Big4. Closing date for accepting is the 10th of December.

Basically, what I want to know is.. If I accept can I back out a later stage?

My reason for asking this is because I have applied for other jobs whose closing dates are around now. To be honest, I much prefer the other jobs but the whole recession thing is scaring me into accepting.

Everyone is saying accept the Big4 and back out later if i get one of the other jobs... Can I do this?

There's no law against it. People leave jobs the whole time.

There was another thread about this around recently which says if they haven't paid for anything it shouldn't be a problem as far as I remember... but I obviously can't say this is correct.

the general thing is that if they havent paid for a masters you are fine.

I'd say the HR model has a few marked down for leaving the contract before it begins

go for it - use it as a backup-plan - there will be no repercussions. it's not as if they won't take advantage of you if you join!
