Handbrake settings for DVD-> MP4 Apple TV conversion

Hi folks... first post here. I'm not really very techie on this stuff, so bear with me...

I'm in the process of converting all of the kids DVDs to MP4 so they can be watched via iTunes / Frontrow on our HTPC (2010 Mac mini 2Gb RAM, 2.4GHz C2D, 320Gb) or streamed to Apple TV(s) in another room(s).

The Apple stuff works really well together (as you'd expect). The only glitch in the whole setup is that the quality of the Handbrake (with VLC) conversion seems to be erratic. 98% of the time, the picture quality is indistinguishable from the DVD, but for scenes where the picture is muddy / murky (e.g. underwater scenes, or nightime shots) the pixilation is very noticeable.

I have Handbrake working on the normal "Apple TV" preset. Any ideas on how I can improve this, or is it just something we'll have to live with? Each movie (typically 90 mins... Pixar/Disney stuff) is usually about 1.2Gb in MP4 format. I don’t particularly want to increase the file size if I can help it… (the kids don’t enjoy their movies any less because of it)… but if there’s an easy fix, I’d give it a try.

    Thanks

I'd try and adjust the quality up to 100%or somewhere in between the default. Also try turn on denoise within picture settings.

Thx for that... I did push the picture quality up to 100%... but the file ended up as 22Gb (no idea why... DVDs are only 4.7Gb or somethig aren't they?)... and it wouldn't play (I just got a black screen). I'll try something else above the current 60% setting… maybe 70%.

Also, I’ll look at the de-noise option too – cheers for that.

Any ideas where I find the "de-noise" option... I can't seem to find it (prob staring me in the face)
