This would initially have to be done through your GP.

No. To have an MRI scan, you need to be referred by your consultant or G.P., and the results need to interpreted by an expert.
    See http://www.avivahealth.ie/member-info/healthcare-info/going-to/mri-scan.xml for basic information.

There is a MRI machine at Letterkenny General Hospital.

Euromedic Ireland will accept referral letters for MRI from physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors. Euromedic have an MRI unit in Sligo General and have a web discount charge of €195.

So you have to pay to see a consultant/GP for a referral, then pay a radiologist for the scan and then pay your consultant/GP again to review the findings?

Feck sake, surely a radiologist can do it all.

I only paid a one-off fee and the result was included. I'm on a medical card and so the cost was just under 200 euro all-in.
