Call me skeptical but I don't think this guy understands how hard it is to get down to scratch. Ok so he should show some progress if he works hard but a year to get to scratch is beyond the hopes of most people.

Totally agree... but I am not sure is he trying to get his handicap to scratch or just play one round of golf at scratch.
I think that if you reasonably athletic and play every day you can manage it...

However having said that I just look at his progress on the website and his personal best for 18 holes is +33.... I started playing in June and am ahead of that!

Yeh I assume its play a level par round which would still be some feat although its been done before and blogged about. Getting to a scratch handicap one year after beginning is just deluded, unless you're Nick Faldo or Greg Norman that is.

He's a third the way through his year and he hasn't broken 100 yet. He has a long, long way to go to even break 80 let alone shoot a level par round.

Wasn't there a guy who went from "Scratch to Scratch" in a year? I think he was an 18HC at the start of the year and played a level-par round by the end. In fact, did he once come on here and post in a thread about his achievement??

It might be impossible but as Henry Ford once said "Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you are probably right".

By setting himself an ambitious target he is more likely to get close than setting an easy target. I think I read his target is to get a scratch handicap by the end of 2011 so this year os just practice. Wilson are sponsoring him too and he has a blog www.novicetoscratch.com

    Ggood luck to him :)

My cousin started playing Golf last year. Got his handicap down to 7 by end year and now playing of 2.

Not bad for playing less then 2 years. He took 5 lessons with Pro to start him off and then at start of year took another 3. Then after that he used go on net for few tips but he really worked on his short game and set up, basically the basics of the game.

He's 25 now and anything he seemed to put his hand to he seemed to be good at as he is excellent Soccer player and Surfer too.

I think it can be done but you got basically put your full time job (if have any) to the side or else have very understanding wife or gf. You also need have bit luck and ability too.

    EVENFLOW

Ah he didn't do too bad though, still miles away from his target but his target was so unrealistic it's not really a surprise.

I don't think I really like these type of things because if someone is a complete novice they don't really know what they are trying to achieve, hence the unrealistic targets.

I would have been guilty myself of that a small bit, when I moved from par 3 to full golf course in winter 09 it only took a couple of months to start shooting sub 90. That progression was so quick it kinda fooled me. Picking up a few pars here and their and the odd birdie give the impression that it is not that hard. I thought "another year of practicing and surely I will be in single digits".

Unfortunately it dose not work like that, the lower your score gets the amount of skill you need increases exponentially in my opinion.

If 10 out of a 100 can shoot sub 80, and 1 out of that 10 can shoot sub Par you start to see a sliding scale of difficulty. I think people underestimate this the whole time in regards to golf.

People always seem to ignore two very important factors in golf too. Intelligence and experience. They don't generally come in a years golf. It takes time. These days the best golfers I see generally seem to be the smart ones.

"Tap" middle of the fairway, I step up "Boom" out of bounds. Makes me feel like a right dope :D
