Swords Open

    Hi ,

I'm thinking of joining here next year to keep my handicap up for opens etc...
I'd plan on playing maybe 15 times here and then a few opens , and I also have 10 society outings . It seems to fit the bill i.e. Low joining fee (approx 380) then pay as you play (€15). Close to home . Sat and Sun comps.
I'm a 21 HC and have played here before but wouldnt describe it as difficult.

    So 3 questions .
What do people think of it as a course/club ?
Does this sound like a good option for me given the amount of golf I play ?
Is anyone a member there ? (need to be proposed and seconded :) )

Other possible option is corballis but have heard it is difficult to get on timesheet . I normally like to get out early on Sat/Sun.

    Cheers

Very difficult to become a member!

    1) You need to sign the visitors book every time you play there as this goes towards your member acceptance and

2)you must have a proposer and seconder!! I believe membership only opens in Feb/Mar for new members and thats only when an old member kicks the bucket!!!!

Its a lovely course by the way and the greens are fantastic, far better greens than Roganstown!

Never knew it would be that difficult to join Swords Open.. The course is ok. OP you might consider Bellewstown as an option. It's just a short spin up the M1 from Swords. €690 for the year which is only a bit more expensive than Swords when you factor in the green fees. Comps every sat & sun.
(And their log cabin clubhouse is bigger than Swords Open's :))

I bet Bellewstown doesnt have the hottie that occaisonly works in the Swords Open log cabin!! She is worth the green fee alone! :)

Really? I've only played it once and that was about 2 months ago. The greens were good shape I thought. The fairways were a little hairy in parts but I thought I just got it on a bad day. Must admit I really liked the course. The climbs weren't nearly as bad as I expected.

Any other opinions of Bellewstown? (sorry for the minor hijack :o)

Some one said the swords open has better greens than roganstown ????????
That's just not true, they are not even in the same league as roganstown.
The swords open is cheap and cheerful nothing more nothing less

I said it- if thats okay? Roganstown are patchy at best! Swords have been pure for many years!! Just becuase a course spends loads of money, it doesnt mean its always goning to be better!

I have played both many times and the difference is obvious!! Also a friend of mine who is a long time member of Roganstown feels the same!!!

I called them a couple of weeks ago and I enquired about the waiting list and was told it was gone and they are actively seeking new members , but they dont accept anyone until March and yes you still need to be proposed and seconded . I havent played there in a couple of years so I wont be on any visitor list . I also have a slight reservation about not renewing my existing membership on the off chance I might get accepted in Swords . (Will my handicap carry over ?)
Thanks for all the comments . Bellewstown was an option on my list too .
I know i'll probably be slated for this , but i'm not overly interested in clubhouse, bar etc.. I like to go play golf and go home . Am going to look out for the cute lady behind the counter though , maybe she'll propose me !!!

Can you update me when you become a member?

And you GUI hcap will carry over! You will need to download a Hcap cert from GUI website!

    Thanks

Hi strokes, I happen to be a member of roganstown( well up till the end of the year anyway) I must have played it 60or70 times this year and I can put my hand on heart and say they have been in great condition for the most part.
I have played a lot of golf in the swords open to and I'll tell you why the greens in my opinion are no where near as good as roganstowns , the reason is they are " pancake flat" no challenge in any shape or form.
I do agree they are always in good shape nice grass and such.

As someone else has said Swords Open are actively seeking members so there should be no problem joining. As far as I know, for the Women anyway, if you join now it covers you for December 2010 and 2011. Best to give them a ring anyway.

I think it would suit you perfectly if you only intend playing 15 or so games there. The membership fee is low and paying as you play suits someone who only plays once a week or less. There isn't any fancy club house but you say that doesn't interest you.

Na, it's a fine course , but everything else was a bad fit for me, so I'm off on the look at the minute.
I might just join somewhere cheap and play opens, I play quite a lot so I can get bored with a course very fast.

    Hi,
Im a member there and there was a problem with the greens early in the summer that has since been fixed so they are in good condition. Fairways can be a bit hairy from time to time but in general they are fine. There are plenty of comps 3 a week for the summer and never any problems getting out almost all of the time. Problem with swords open is there are a lot of beginners on it at the weekend and rounds can be very slow. Bellewstown would be a good bit harder than swords open and unlimited golf for 690 is probably the best value around.
