    UK Freeview = DVBT+Mpeg2
Irish Saorview = DVBT+Mpeg4 ....that is HD over dvb-t as well so the ferguson should work fine
    UK Freeview HD= DVBT2+Mpeg4

    Mpeg4 backward capable with mpeg2
    T2 backward capable with T

Therefore a T2 "Freeview HD" branded unit has all the bits needed to work anywhere in UK and Ireland.

The standard for the free public service muxes will be DVB-T. Conversion to DVB-T2 has never been mentioned from an official source.

The next possible opportunity to introduce T2 would be a future pay DTT TV service but this would depend on the availability of T2 equipment already in homes across the country.

The receiver in the link is DVB-T as indicated in the specs.

Only Channel 4 HD is currently missing from the freesat lineup but may be coming soon, the others are there BBC 1 HD, BBC HD and ITV HD.

    Terrestrial = via an aerial
Satellite = via Dish and LNBF

    Tuners
T= Terrestrial, Irish HD and UK (Freeview) except HD
T2 = UK HD Terrestrial (does T also, "Freeview HD")

S = Satellite (Freesat, Sky), some HD
S2 = Satellite. (does S also) Needed to receive all HD.

Codecs (How the video is coded)
    Freeview & Freesat = MPEG2
Saorview (even if not HD), "Freeview HD", "Freesat HD" = MPEG4

Saorview will not need T2. Only "Freeview HD" needs T2. What he says. T2 works for T

There are no plans to use DVB-T2 on Saroview at present. Who knows what can happen in the future but by that time you will probably be upgrading for some other reason anyway.

thanks folks, just been on to tony to confirm order. the main reasons i wanted t2 were to recieve the freeview hd from uk or for future proof for saorview if needed.

since it will have a dish and antenna installed will get most the uk hd channels from dish so its not really a problem. recpetion for uk freeview isnt great anyway with current antenna setup. thanks again.

    Hi

According to the website www.saortv.info. all Saorview approved equipment will have to be DVB-T2 equipped as of January 1.2013.

"Dave" is free on Freeview. It is not on FreeSAT, but it is a pay channel on Sky. The only legal way to get "Dave" for free is via an aerial from Northern Ireland or Wales.

There may also be one or two other channels. There are far more channels on Satellite.

Dave is mostly repeats (with added ads) of BBC shows but they have started some own grown programs lately.

The fact that it is now in the specs does imply that it will be used sometime in the future .... whenever that might be :(

Partly it is to ensure cross border compatibility now that T2 is used in NI.

It is part of Nordig. We do not need it, but other Nordig member countries do.

The Cush says that Ch4 and some BBC channels are missing on the freesat package .I have an official Freesat bluray recorder( Panasonic dmr-bs 750) and all the mentioned channels have been available since I got it in January.Panasonic have ceased making Freesat recorders and are now next to impossible to obtain TMULL

This thread was recently dug up, after lying dormant for 2 years. It should have been locked as soon as it resurfaced.

All of the main channels are on Freesat now.

Good point . Just because its part of the Nordig spec really implies nothing either way as to whether it will be used by saorview in the future.

Well, yes and no. How far does 'the future' go? In about 5 years, there might be a move to DVB-T2, but I doubt it. If there was a release of spectrum that would put pressure on the current network (including a few more muxes), then a move would be required, but we have bond-holders to pay off first, so I would not expect anything for a loooong time.

RTE are still not treating Saorview as the default distribution of TV. The RTE News Now is not being used as anything other than a toy news channel, with endless repeats and simulcasts of NEWS. The same applies to RTE Jr as we still have children's programmes on RTE 2HD, even the cartoons are in HD.

Perhaps when we have a National Children's Hospital and joined up Luas Lines .................

Fair enough but the point I'm making is that just because it becomes part of the Nordig/Saorview spec it does not give any clue as to RTE's intentions either way.

Nothing gives any clue as to RTE's intentions!

Most of RTE don't know RTE's intentions until after we do.

You could include the Minister Rabitte in that. He thought that the Analogue Switch Off was the launch of Saorview even though he actually launched it.
