Looking fro a new decent short hairstyle, I have very thick hair and any shape I get cut grows out very quickly(about 3 weeks).

If I was to bring a picture of what I wanted into a trendy barber would they be able to replicate it? For example....grafton street barbers?

Any barber (trendy or not) should be able to replicate a haircut from a photo - providing you are not being unreasonable and expecting a miracle such as curly hair suddenly being straight or vise versa. :)

Grafton, Trinity, The Warldorf, Knights all carry books of images that you can select from. Most barbers do. But bring along the photos that you like. Bring a few if you can, different angles, front side and back if you can find 'em.

The real trick is talking to your barber, knowing what to ask for, asking his/her advice. It's their trade so they tend to know what they are talking about. Some things you should consider before going in to get the short cut.
Nape. Thats the hairline on the back of your neck. You can get it tapered (graduated natural cut blending into the longer hair) or you can get it Block cut (straight across the back of your neck).
How high to cut the nape - collar length, above collar.
Arches. These are the areas of sparse hair above your ears. Get them trimmed natural or high.
Sideburns. High (level with the top of your ear), medium or long.
How short do you want the back and sides cut? Using clipper numbers here is useful. Ask for a number 4, see how it feels and decide then if it's too long or too short for you tastes. If it's too long ask the barber to take more off, a number 3 or number 2 even.
Do you back comb, side comb (and if so on which side). How long do you want the top left.

The worst thing you can ever tell your barber is to "Trim it, just a little tidying up". That only works when your barber KNOWS what your preferred haircut is. His idea of a trim length and your idea of a trim length and every other barbers idea of a trim length are different. It's the 'How long is a piece of string' concept.

I like to go to a quality barber every 3 months to really get my haircut back in shape. I interspace those visits with trips to my local barber 'for a trim' - just to keep the shape of the haircut in order. Finally I interspace those visits with clipping my own hair at home. A home cut is great if you already have the haircut you want and are just tidying it up. When it starts to lose shape your local barber will help pull it back. When it eventually gets out of hand again then bite the bullet, gird your loins and take yourself into a quality barber for a hot towel wet shave, hair cut, head massage, razor finish, chat, coffee and if you are lucky some live music. :)

Thanks for all the advice...really appreciate it!

I would love to get a haircut like this...I think the texture is very important here too so I guess it would come down to what product I use?
