Herd number

    Just wondering what is the minimum number of cows you need to keep onto your herd number?We're selling a few cows. Thanks.

    If you only have one animal you need a herd number for it. So I would assume the minimun number is one?

    If you have no animals for the annual herd test any year they will make your number dormant. To reactivate just give them(local office) a ring a few days before you plan to purchase new stock and you will be back in action.
    in some counties they may have a time period with no stock in your name after which they make your number dormant, but either way reactivating is usually not difficult

    But you get a visit from the clip board carrying brigade. You get to answer terribly complex questions about boundary fences etc.

    You may be able to get the herd number put into your name. Less hassle hopefully.
