Firewire problems

I recently got a new macbook pro. My hard drive only has a firewire 400 connection and the macbook only has a firewire 800, so i bought a cable to connect the two. When i plug it in, the hard drive powers up but doesnt show up on the laptop. Any suggestions as to what could be wrong and how do i fix it?
