Fintan O'Toole, journo with Irish Times (amongst other things) has gone live, complete with its petition:

    http://fintanotoole.ie/petition/

First of all, fair dues to him for trying to do something. Secondly, I don't disagree with the 10 measures he outlines, ones he admits are a starting point.

However, it is disappointing we don't see somebody like O'Toole looking for a reform of Irish media ownership and a legal requirement for journalists to disclose their interests (political, financial, other) when writing articles or books hosting TV programmes, promoting causes or the rest. There is a case to answer. A big case.

At some point, the Irish media (RTE, Irish Times, Sindo and the rest) need to cop on and admit their role in helping create the mess we're in. It's not just Alison O'Riordan who is left looking less than credible to be honest.

I was interested until I read number 2.

I think most journalists would declare where there was a conflict of interest. it's only in the minority of cases that there would be, if you strip out hte Sindo that is.

ok i don't like columnists which is what fot and half of the IT is these days but this guy, writes serious excellent articles on political reform for years, its not some suddden thing or him, ok so he also an editor of some kind in the irish times, im sure he has criticised the papers property porn, but yes he's the writer for the establishment paper, his proposals aren't very radical, they near mainstream, what do you expect?

also lots of people lazily suggesting why doesn't he go for election, you don't need to be elected to express political opinions.

Fintan never declares how he would bridge the 20 billion it is costing us every year to fund his union lackeys, apart from taxing the rich (but not the PS high income earners) who by the way, have the means to leave so we're still left in the ****e.

Nor do I think his self-appointed politburo going to make the sums magically disappear, poor deluded communist.

Actually, the only point I would have a problem with is six.

Women will go into politics if they want to go into politics. What is this quota bullsh!t about?

For someone who works in the media, having nothing to recommend about it across 10 points says it all.

Looks like he'll have a hard time reaching 100,000 readers he wanted, sorry I mean signatures on his petition (I was thinking of the Irish Times readership figs - 105K). Less than 9,000 right now. People staying away in droves...
