This site has an online mock test
    http://www.ism.ie/index.php?page=mock_theory_test
but its ridulously easy, about 90% of it is just common sense. Are these the kinda questions that will actually be asked in the Irish theory test?

Firstly I see you have mentioned Canada so this may apply:
Holders of driving licences from other countries

If you are not from any of the above countries, (for example, if you are from Canada, the United States or New Zealand), and you hold a national driving licence or an international driving permit from your own country, you may drive in Ireland for the duration of your temporary visit (up to 12 months).

If your stay in Ireland will be more than 12 months you can apply for an Irish driving licence but you will need to go through the full driver licensing procedure. You must first complete a driver theory test, apply for a learner driving permit and complete your driving test in Ireland. If you pass your driving test, you will be issued with a full Irish driving licence.

If it doesn't apply go here http://www.theorytest.ie/english/driver-theory-test/index.php and apply for a Theory Test.

Study using the CD-ROM http://dttstore.prometric.com or Easons and buy the Rules of The Road Book €5 or use www.rotr.ie
There can be some tricky questions regarding licensing and agricultural stuff.

After you pass you take your cert to your local tax office (search google for *insert your county* car tax office) and go there.

    Theory Test is around €35
    Learner Permit is €15

I applied for the theory test online so I deleted half the thread but thanks for the info. Yeah I'd better do some studying because I can't see them putting such a high rate of easy common sense questions on the actual test.

Did the theory test the other day and failed with flying colours. Its way harder than the Canadian one. Only got 28/40. Better get that CD.

    When I did mine i passed (36/40).

I felt that it was tricky enough, however if I had taken the earphones I might of gotten a better result and its something I would advise to people, reading difficulties or not!

same got 36/40 first time, if you just keep doing the tests on the CD you should pass.. most questions are common sense.

I got 39/40...I't wasn't that hard as I thought it would be, I only did a bit of study a last day before the actual test...

I don't think the online mock test is representative of the actual test.
I failed by only using this method of "study".
You're best off getting the book or CD Rom.

I got 40/40 in the theory test. Nice one! Its worth looking at both the CD and the book for preparing for the theory test OP. The cd would be more worth while as the way the questions will be presented will be the same when doing your theory test.

You need to cover all the areas required for the theory test though depending it its for car and tractor and work motor vehicle; bus; motorbike; moped. You need to be aware if new questions are added. Some questions can be quiet difficult and can be confusing so its worth spending the time to study them well. The rest of the questions are common sense. Practice practice practice! Practice makes perfect when testing yourself on the cd while preparing for the theory test. Theory test cert if valid for two years until you apply for your first learners permit, if you do not it become invalid and you will have to sit your theory test again!

The provisional licence is now called the learner permit. You must do your theory test before you can attain a learner permit!

You can have as many provisional licences as you like but, the first one and second one are valid for two years each and you must have someone accompany you with a full licence (2 or 3 years or more and be over 21!)
Before you can apply for your third one and other remaining ones you need to show proof you have done or will do a driving test.

For you, if you start doing your driving lessons now you wouldn't have to comply with the new law regarding driving lessons if you wait till after 4th april 2011 you will have to comply with the standard of 12 lessons, 36 hours to comply with the law and show proof before contemplating a driving test.

    Best of luck OP!

I would just like to point out that the irish school of motoring is not affliated with the Driver Theory test and that is why their online test is much easier. As others have said, get the 4th edition (may 2009) official driver theory test book or cd rom

If the OP already has a learner permit they don't have to take any lessons before 4th April 2011 to escape the new regulations. It only affects New Learner Permits issued after the above date.
