Doubt you'll get a reply to this as anything posted would compromise security and get any serving personnel their ticket.

That article is a year old and relates to the purchase of equipement to replace old stocks. Hardly relevant to an increased alert state due to the IMF.

Hmmm, there is such a thing as reading between the lines. If you believe every press release by state agencies I'd be very worried. Obviously, the army is preparing for civil unrest and stockpiles are being increased.

TBH, I'd be very worried if the army was called upon. IIRC, the great idea proposed by officers in the Irish Army the last time they were called upon (the burning of the British embassy) by the Gardai was to draw a line across the road and threaten to shoot all who crossed it.

Obviously, you haven't the slightest clue on what the DF is doing. You can read between the lines all you want, doesn't mean it's true.

BTW, quite a bit has changed in the DF since the carry on at the British embassy. Look up the Paddy's Day Riots in Kosovo and how the Irish troops did.

Not sure what people think went wrong in 1981 at the H block Demonstration from a defense forces (as opposed to Gardai) point of view.

A the recent Scannal documentary covered that incident. In it, Bernadette McAliskey had the last word and she said if the Army had fired a single shot Dublin would have been in flames that night and Ireland at civil war. I believe her.

I have heard a civvies on several occasions lying about what happened that day, how soldiers beat all and sundry for no reason - this was pure nonsense. The Army held a line that day and thankfully didn't have to hit anyone.

The Kosovo riot poccington refers to is covered here if anyone is interested

I have been told by one that was there, that what happened at the H Block riot is that the Guards were holding the line and taking serious punishment, the Officer i/c was waiting and waiting afraid to make a decission and a member gave the order to charge and charge the Gardai did!!

The Army held no line, there was a company inside armed with live ball and the Officer i/c was prepared to fire if Gardai lost the street and the Embassy was attacked and he would have.

I understand the officer in charge of the army detail that day wanted to fix bayonets, and went on to become a well known pacifist.

    Allegedly.

I heard the bayonets weren't even broke, and the officer went on to do very well in X-Factor - FACT!.

All wrong, what really happened was that the officer gave the order to fire and the troops disobeyed. What ensued was a benny hill style chase through the streets of Dublin they chased him to Dublin Port where he boarded a ship and went on to change his name to Nicholas Sarkozy and now is married to a supermodel and working as the president of France.......True story!

I have to say, I have a great image of Dirty Harry with an FN held Rambo style with a massive grin on his face. Muttering some fairly iconic lines.

Anyone remember why those two initials are relevant in relation to a certain senior soldier that day? :)

No, i'm not privy to the internal command structure of the Irish Army. However, one of the main goals of the DF is to back up the civil authorities. If they are not training for civil unrest due to the current economic situation then my opinion of the PDF will further decrease.

    Lol.

If the DF was to come out and say we were training to contain riots, you'd be one of the first on here to lead the outraged folk.

Anyway, we're a bit busy making sure hospitals can continue to function at the moment :)

    no?

FN were the initials of a senior officer's first names - he was known as F.N *******, think he was the actual OIC if I remember correctly.

The Air Corps have fitted loudspeakers and an iPod dock to their AWs so they can blast their version of Street Spirit at rioters, hoping they will get depressed and go home.
