Converting Image Files to .png?

    Hi all,

This might be the wrong place for this thread. Mods, please move if neccessary!

I'm wondering if there is a program out there that will convert the likes of jpegs, bmps etc. to .png format? The reason I ask is that I'm trying to do out a flyer and need band logos on it but with the edges of these logos transparent instead of a black square around them.

    Thanks in advance.

    Adobe Photoshop can do it.

You can download a full working 30-day free trial of it from the Adobe website.

Photoshop or GIMP will do this for you. Simply open the file in them and do a "Save As" from the File menu, select "png" from file type and you have yourself a png file. You can open that up then and do the transparent thing you want.

    Gimp is free, photoshop isn't

Thanks for the replies! Do you know is it an easy or tedious thing to do with regards to getting the correct outline of logos?

Depends on the image, sorta like how long is a piece of string. If the edges of the logo are clearly defined and sharp and the square around them is one solid colour it should be a simple case of select the colour and replace with what you want.

If it is a fuzzy image you might need to tidy up the edges yourself to get it just right. Depends how much of a perfectionist you are.

Ah so it's possible to just replace a colour with transparency. That's good to know! Thanks!

Well (and anybody can jump in with a better option) the way I would do it is to create a new layer with background set to transparent. Put the logo ontop of this layer as a second layer. Select the black box with the magic wand and hit delete. Then save the image as a png.
