VW Polo going crazy after a throttle body clean

The car was cutting out, especially in bad weather, the revs would just drop and then it'd cut out.

Reading online, most users said throttle body needed cleaning and recommended Wynn's Carb cleaner from Halfords. So I bought one, took off the airfilter(replaced that too), started the car and sprayed a bit into the throttle body while revving.

Now the car is going crazy, high RPMs constantly, 1.2-2000, when I stop they slowly settle down to around 800-900. But once I start moving they go up, and even if I set it in neutral while moving the revs still not drop until I come to a stop.

It's super annoying not to mention dangerous, basically went from one extreme to the other.

Anybody know what it could be? I'll probably take it to a garage, I wonder how much will it cost me?

You need to do a Throttle Body Alignment on the ECU. When you cleaned the body the computer forgot the positions of the throttle. You'll need to find someone with VCDS to do it for you, I think there's a list of lads with it on the motors tech help forum.

It's a 5 minute job but involves diagnostics so expect a charge of about 40/50 euro in a garage....

Also wondering did you happen to clean out the 1/2 inch pipe that connects to the bottom of the air filter housing,on the left hand side of the breather as your looking straight into the engine.

This pipe brings up warm air from the engine block when the car is running.

It often clogs up with "fat or gunk". Therefor leading to struggling and jumping rev's.

Seems a common problem on older Polo's during cold weather.
Also check to see both all the pipes are connected just incase any are loose. Good luck.

    Forgot about this thread,

    Muckie, I cleaned up everything.

One of problems was when we reassambled the filter housing we forgot to reconnect that 1/2 inch pipe cable to the filter housing.

It was still running on high revs for a while after the reconnection but then it calmed down on it's own.

So if anyone has a similar problem in the future, make sure you reconnect everything and give it a week or two, it'll settle.

    Thank You guys!
