    In work in Kildare in Friday and noticed the following strange frost formations on some dead branches.

    They formation consisted of individual ice strands which were extremely fine and hairlike.

    At first I thought they were some kind of fungus.

    Strangest stuff I've seen too. You can see at the top of the branch on the photos where it has melted.

    It really is like spun sugar! Amazing. You should put a sample in a bag, see what happens when it thaws.

    It kind of resembled burning thread when it thawed. Took very little (either sun or breath) to get it to thaw.

    Really interesting photos! It looks a bit like feather ice, and after a bit of Googling I managed to find some similar examples;

    I couldn't find much more info on it, maybe someone with a bit more knowledge will be able to fill us in!

    Have something similar growing outside my window it's called a frost flower!
    The formation of frost flowers, also known as "ice flowers," is apparently dependent on a freezing weather condition occurring when the ground is not already frozen. The sap in the stem of the plants will expand (water expands when frozen), causing long, thin cracks to form along the length of the stem. Water is then drawn through these cracks via capillary action and freezes upon contact with the air. As more water is drawn through the cracks it pushes the thin ice layers further from the stem, causing a thin "petal" to form. In the case of woody plants and (living or dead) tree branches the freezing water is squeezed through the pores of the plant forming long thin strings of ice that look uncannily like hair i.e. "frost beard".
