Buy and fit this and one of your up and coming threads will be -

"My TDI engines gone bang, what to do next"?

    Read some of his feedback.

The box itself is nothing more then a resistor in a housing. The resistor fools the engine into thinking the air temp is cooler then normal and hence pours more fuel in, this supposidly gives more power

Actually it's no more of a scam than any of these dumb tuning boxes. They all work on exactly the same principle by fooling the ECU into over-fuelling; the fancy adjustable ones just use a variable resistor to control the degree of over-fuelling. All of them, irrespective of price, have the same potential to cause damage.

Jesus I've never seen so much negative feedback for an item

Get a proper remap, well worth spending a bit of money to get it done properly.

If this rubbish actually worked then we would all have them fitted. So much junk for sale on ebay these days.

Ha and look at his replies, nice chap.

Yeah I've had a proper remap on 3 cars at this stage well worth it

How much for a typical full remap? Would it increase full efficiency at normal speeds?

How long is a piece of string?

You can have a generic map dumped into your ECU and there is no guarantee that it will work any better or be any safer than the box.

You can have a semi-custom re-map (a generic map produced for the specific engine-code / ECU rev in your car but not tailored to your requirements) and these will generally increase BHP & torque numbers. They will generally improve fuel efficiency unless you hoon around permanently.

A full custom re-map will be tailored to your specific requirements and tested to them, whether this is better mpg, higher torque, "wider" power-band, et.

These would all be referred to as Stage 1 re-maps and generally minimal hard-ware changes are made.

Stages 2 & 3 require hard-ware investments - turbo, intercooler, injectors, exhaust or even a LSD on FWD car to keep the power down, solid clutch upgrade, etc. - before the software is layered on top. All stage 2 & 3 maps are custom.

In any case, don't allow anyone at a remap unless they can run a full computer diagnosis on your car before and afterwards. A before and after dyno printout is nice but on any given day a strap-down dyno will produce varying numbers for the same car.

If you go for a re-map, be cautious about booting the car from low revs in high gear or you'll be replacing your DMF sooner rather than later. There is no point in trying to wring the last bit of power out of those VAG PD engines; re-mapped or not they tend to top out at about 3.5k / 3.8k max.
