Nintendo DS RPGs

I'm putting this here instead of the Nintendo forum as it's an RPG based thread!

I've decided that I'm missing out on too many great RPGs being released on the Nintendo DS, so I've decided to buy one. I think I'm going to go for the DS XL version of the handheld mainly becuase I want a bigger screen! Portability isn't an issue as I only plan to be playing it at home anyway. However, I've heard claims of pixelation when the games are translatede onto the DS XL. Will this be an issue?

Games I plan to get straight away include:
    • Chrono Trigger (haven't played it yet, don't shoot me!)
    • Pokemon Diamond/Pearl (I enjoyed the blue/red versions from years ago but haven't played the more recent incarnations)
    • Dragon Quest V (again, have never played it)
Regarding Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest V: Are these ports altered much from their original releases on the SNES? I want the "pure" original version of the games if possible!

Finally, with the impending release of the Nintendo 3DS next year, can we expect a price drop of the Nintendo DS soon? Should I wait until after Xmas beofre buying anything? I realise that's a lot of questions so thanks in advance!

Chrono Trigger is a straight port with a new dungeon added. You need to play it.

Dragon Quest 5 is a port of the PS1 game and has new 3D backdrops with 2D sprite work. It looks really good and the game mechanics are unchanged from the original. Definitely pick it up as well as DQ4

As for games you should pick up:

Definitely get the 2 Mario and Luigi games. Great battle system and really funny.

Etrian Odyssey you might like. It's a full on dungeon crawler but a really good one. If you do like it there's 120+ hours in each of the 3 games.

Final Fantasy 4 is a great reimagining of a great game.

You should import the two shin megami tensei games, strange journey and devil survivor. They are much more mature and way harder than the usual squaresoft stuff but really good if difficult.

Also heard really goodthings about FF four warriors of light.

Heard good things about the worold ends with you as well

If you can import then Front Mission is a damn good strategy RPG.

Fire emblem as well is amazinggoing by previous entries.

Heard mixed things about Suikoden Teirkries

    There's also Nostalgia which I haven't player.

And before I for get Dragon Quest Rocket Slime is great fun.

I also hope you are planning on getting Dragon Quest 9, because you really should be.

I heard the DS Lite was already going for 50 euro this week in Game.

Id test out the resolution of an average game on the XL before you pick one up...id imagine there been alot of big pixels.

Cheers Retr0...you're an encycolpedia of RPG knowledge!

I've been doing some research on importing DS games. Apparently original DS games are not region locked, but DSi only games are. Is this correct?
    From wiki
The immediate successor to the Nintendo DS, the Nintendo DSi, is region-locked, but only in terms of its downloadable games. Physical DS game carts will play on it regardless of region of origin (DSi-only and even DSi-enhanced games are region-locked though)

That is correct yes, all DS games are region free. Also, none of the games you are interested in (or that Retr0 listed) are DSi enhanced games and thus are all region free. :)

I would suggest Pokemon HeartGold or SoulSilver instead of Diamond and Pearl. Although they are remakes of Gold and Silver I think they are the best Pokemon games by far.

Get pokemon heartgold and chrono trigger, and you're all set. And the world ends with you, Love that game.

Don't forget the world ends with you. Probably one of the best rpgs to come out in the last 5 years,

Hmmm, The World Ends With You definitely sounds interesting. I like the whole art style and Japanese urban youth culture thing. But I'm wary of button bashing action-RPGs. I didn't even enjoy Zelda: A Link to the Past when I got the re-release on the GameBoy Advance a few years ago. Nothing can compare to the strategy contained in a turn based RPG, imo.

Still though, I'll give it a try...!
