WHV as a stop-gap between temporary work visas?

I'm currently teaching in NZ on a visa that expires in early January, as my job finishes in December. I've spent ages applying for more work and have finally just been offered another teaching job starting in term 1 next year, which is the end of January. I checked today and found out it's going to take 60 days to get a visa, which is cutting it really fine.

I know you can only work on a WHV for a certain number of months with the same employer but I wonder if anyone knows if I could get a WHV, apply for the proper visa, and start the job on the WHV while I wait for the other one to come through? I'm not really worried about wasting my WHV opportunity because I'm 30 at the moment and won't be eligible for one in the future anyway. I just need to make sure I can start that job on time because I don't want to lose it!

    Any advice appreciated!

In NZ you can work as long as you like on a WHV as long as it's temporary employment. Technically you're not allowed to be employed permanently.

You could probably get a free consultation with an immigration agent (get a licensed one via http://www.iaa.govt.nz/) and ask a bunch of questions to see what your options are. Apparently there is legislation on the way to allow for bridging visas but the process isn't implemented as yet.
