Android and data usage

I think was mentioned on this forum, Androids use quite a bit of data. I'm new to Android, bought 1st Android on Sat.

    LG Optimus One Android 2.2

Am concerned about the phone just going off to the web and communicating over 3g, I'm on a plan with a v limited amount of units.

Gmail app on phone, as there is a refresh option, looks like you manually have to retreive mesages, which I assume is good news , so you can retreive over wifi. (Cant see my sent items only inbox- am I doing something wrong)

Dont know if this an LG or Android thing, but there is a market notication icon, which tells you about new apps, does this use much data ?

Dont use FB or twitter, so I assume these apps wont use any data, once I dont sign on to em ?

What's the easiest way to make sure the phone doesn't communicate to the Web over 3g, when I don't want to, i.e. when I am abroad

There's a "Mobile" icon in widgets.

Drag it onto the desktop and use it to connect/disconnect.

Not unless your watching lots of YouTube or something. I find the Apps you've mentioned use very little. Also found that Google Navigation uses very little.

(unless me data usage app is way off)

There's an app called Droid Wall that you can use to stop certain prgrams connecting. Not sure if the phone has to be rooted first though.

/edit..it does have to be rooted.

You could get an app for monitoring your usage. I have a 3g one on mine and it lets me know if I'm going to hit my daily usage.

For market and Gmail you can just turn off background data.

i use 3g watcher combined with apndroid. 3g watcher monitors my usage and can be set to use apndroid to disable my data when i reach my limit or get close to it.
