[PC] 60% FPS increase. Windows 7 behind the lag?

Now I've tried plenty of fixes for this game such as pillaging my graphics, raping my config, running it at high priority, steam @ low priority, disabling steam cloud sync, disabling in-game steam, removing audio devices etc.

All had little or no effect and none fixed the game breaking FPS lag and CPU choking I was having. My game would stutter every 3-4 seconds and freeze for a couple of seconds maybe every 30 seconds. The game was completely unplayable and I had almost given up hope. I saw a couple of people claimed to get massive performance boosts when rolling back to Windows XP. Although I was highly skeptical at first, I figured I had very little to lose (except time).

So I created a partion on my HD and installed Windows XP Professional 32bit. After installing drivers, I booted the game curious to see if it had any benefits. So I joined a server I was shocked that during a map my FPS didn't drop under 100 once and was well over 125 most of the time. This is compared to 20-70 I was getting on Windows 7. I had zero lag or stutter and also didn't get the crackling ambient noises that had plagued me after the latest patch on Windows 7. So for once the game was running 100% smooth and as it should be. Although the FPS increase was roughly about 60%, it was a 100% imrpovement in stutters and general slowdons which I did not experience once on XP. I could actually play the game now!

    Comparison Screenshots:

    Windows 7:

    Windows XP

Both shots on exact same config.

I'm well aware that this is a less then ideal solution for most, but if you are eager to play lagfree and don't want to wait for Treyarch to pull their finger out then you should definitely consider this. I've been told that the problem is to do with how sound is rendered on Windows 7/Vista is much less efficient then that of XP and this leads to the slowdon on that OS.

    Test Rig:

    Intel e8400 @ 3.6 Ghz
    ATI Radeon HD4890 1 GB
    4 GB RAM
    Soundblaster X-Fi XtremeMusic Soundcard

Windows 7 is bad for gaming. Don't care what anyone says, tried it on various systems with various different games and, if the game is in any way nice to look at Windows 7 runs it through the ringer.

As soon as I installed XP my games' FPS increased massively.

I'm not sure what it is, exactly, but if you're serious into gaming there's no point having it right now til something gets sorted out. Dual boot XP for games or just use XP in general.

First time I had trouble with it really, most games run 5% max faster on XP for me.

its like when xp came out,
it was easier for systems to run games while on windows 2000.

xp iis 10 years old. the system requirements for xp is pretty much the same as windows 98 compared to the computers you can build now.

it used little resource compared to windows 7, so games have more resources available to run on.

Different versions of Direct X? Maybe try and force a WIN 7 machine to an earlier version of DX will give perf boosts?

No, exact same API used for both, CoD only runs on DX9 even on Windows 7.

I have listened and agreed to this XP vs. Vista/7 for a while now. I would have been completely on the XP side when Vista was released. However, considering 7 is so stable and utilises DX11 to some extent, not to forget that it is actually possible to get 64-bit drivers for most bits of hardware now I cannot see why anyone would stay with XP.

If you have a 64bit CPU and ~3+GB RAM I cannot see why a native 32bit OS should be installed. The same rationale could be used for the DX9 to Dx11 argument.

As with most API's there are parts that are added/removed/deprecated.. CoD is based on an older engine. Either WaW / CoD4 something like that which was built up using something like Doom3/Quake4 engine.

By the way, there are very few FPS's in existence that are not based on some version of the Quake engine.

DirectX 11 has a few bells and whistles such as tessellation(sp?) where objects are rendered a good few times as faster by using it's own GPU processor and by doing so, freeing up your CPU.
So running DX9 on a DX10/11 card will always run "faster".
