what you plan on hunting will help narrow it down

for mostly fox id say 223 or 204, but starting off they can be expensive to run when learning, so maybe a 22lr-22wmr-17hmr would suit better

go for a .17hmr, something like a cz 452 varmint.
accurate, flat shooting, cheap to run, and you'll have enough power to take down a fox out to 90-100 yards, great rifle to start with

shop around a bit, i'm pretty sure you could pick up a nice second hand one with a scope and mod on it for around €550ish
100 yards on a fox would be good for a rimfire, any thing past that is a bit inhumane, good shot placement is always essential.
main thing is start small. practice at 25yards first, then increase the distance as your accuracy improves, pretty soon you'll be shooting out past 100 yards no bother. so you'll have loads of fun with long range bunnies

thanks lad..what do you use??? how would you find the .22 or 17hmr on shooting mags or greys???
again ive no clue about rifles!

if it's mostly fox you'd be better off with .22 mag. If your planning on shooting greys I can tell you that they never sit long enough when you have a rifle with you, they'll sit at 100 yards all day if you bring the shotgun!
However, if one does happen to sit, the 17hmr would be the best rifle to take him with...

For the best of both worlds you can use an in-between ammo choice, like .22 mag CCI TNT, they have a 30gr head which gives flat shootin with the added power of the magnum...

i asked the same question a few days ago op and have a look here in the link. got some pretty good answers for all the questions off everyone here when i asked them as a newbie too. theres some good links in that too showing different bullet specs and what they mean. save the lads here answering the same questions twice:)

the 17hmr is perfect for mags and greys, i shot around 40 mags and 15 greys with mine earlier this year. if they don't see you they'll just stay where they are, so you have to be pretty sneaky to get the drop on them. only thing about maggies is they hop around a lot so you only get about 2-3 seconds to take the shot.

all the info on different calibers and bullet types can be confusing.
the most important thing is that you buy a rifle that you'll be comfortable with

Maybe this is a newbie thing to say, but does nobody else find the thoughts of shooting at mags and greys with a rifle alarming? What goes up must come down like!

only fire when they are on the ground
you wouldnt have a chance of hitting a bird in the sky with one

I was more thinking of a tree. If you missed while they were on the ground, would you not have a nice vets bill for bullet-wound-to-heifer-leg surgery?

you shouldnt fire near farm animals and before you take a shot you must make 100% sure you have a background for the bullet to hit if you do miss. for instance you shouldnt fire at a deer or fox or whatever sitting on the brow of a hill.
