Looking to buy a remote to control both TV and Sky, any one got any recommendations?

Have seen some very pricey ones to some very cheap, looking for something under 40euro.

Any one have any experiences with them?

Will be used for controlling Sky+HD and a Philips HDTV

You could do far worse than the Silvercrest 10-in-1 universal remote that is in Lidl next Thursday. Right good value it is for €8.99. I have one and have used its learning facility to operate TV, Sky+,UPC, & DVD/VCR unit. Great lidl:) gadget.

could do far better too, a harmony can be had for under 40, far superior to any of the all in ones available. 29GBP in richer sounds i believe.

Hate to state the obvious here but the Sky remote can be easily programmed to work the tv aswell-just go into the interactive menu-help centre-set up my remote and follow the easy steps there.

Unfortunately that won't let me change the source of the TV (ie; from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2 etc) and two remotes is a bit of a balls.

I think the "help" key (in TV mode) on the SKY remote, will cycle through the AV inputs. It used to do it for my Panasonic - no longer use SKY, have a Humax Freesat box now and that remote works similarly.

Would this all in one remoter in Lidl on Thursday help me? I have 3 different satellite receivers (Fortec Star, Optimec and Challenger for foreign sat and freesat.) and of course 3 different remotes. I have a remote for a dvd player and a remote for a video player and of couse the tv remote itself. So the question is if I buy this remote should it work with all my units and will I no longer need 6 remotes?

:eek:Looks more like a Ipad than a remote and almost as pricy as one too! Maybe I'll treat myself when "Celtic Tiger No.2 comes along":D

If you're on a budget, the one in Lidl works fine.Have one of the older versions and it worked a dream, very easy to program.Compatible with Sky boxes aswell.

Bought a Harmony 650 a few days ago. I have 5 devices and was using 4 remotes. It is best purchase I made in years. Highly recommended.

I second the Harmony 650 recommendation as long as you have less than 5 devices. Ergonomically excellent and *much* easier to set up than a one for all. You do need a PC though for the setup which is not normally the case with a one for all.

Declan I have a Philips HD TV and sky hd box and i'm using an old sky+ remote ( lost hd remote ) and the help button while on "tv" mode changes the sourse.

Exactly! - see post 6 above:) Declan doesn't seem to have re-visited his thread, though.

The help button in tv mode works for all tv's as far as I know.Tested it on mine and it worked ok for changing input source.

The "Help" key on my Sky+ HD remote brings up an option to change the source, but you must use the arrow keys to select the source and the arrow keys do nothing on the Sky+HD remote .

Will probably get the Harmony remote discussed earlier. Sounds good.

Do you not just press the Help key repeatedly to switch the sources?

Have tried this with my Sky+ remote and it doesn't do anything. Pressing Help brings up sources but doesn't switch between them.

Keep pressing it repeatedly-it's a bit slower in switching than the tv remote but it works.

Definitely doesn't work on Philips 5000 series.

Sometimes there are several sets of codes in the SKY remote for particular TV models. Have you tried the alternates? Occasionally a particular code will operate the TV volume control, standby etc., but will not operate the more exotic features. In this case if there are alternate codes listed in the SKY manual, try 'em!

I bought this remote yesterday from Lidl and it is the bargain of the year for me at just €9. The Silvercrest remote worked with every single machine that I have and it is really easy to program and use:)

Does it work with Sky +, Pause, rewind etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,907 ✭✭✭✭Kristopherus

Well mine does anyway. You have to use the "Learn" function to set it up. Nothing a bit of patience won't solve:)

Will try pick up the Lidl one today, and if all fails I'll try pick up a cheap Harmony online

Misco.ie have the Harmony 300 on sale for €24.37 at the moment (+ €1.99 P&P), which can control up to 4 devices.
I've a Harmony 785 at the moment and find it great. Only weak point is the PC programming software which is a pain and takes ages to configure. The 300 has new software which looks much better (hopefully!).

The LIDL Silvercrest one actually does the trick. A bit tedious giving it all the learn functions and some buttons refuse to be able to "learn" so takes a bit of getting used to. Still good value for 8.99!
