24hr Computer Suites

A lot of unis in England have these. I see no reason why it shouldn't at least be looked into by the SU/NUIG.

Security is the only real issue, but swipe card access and sufficient CCTV is all it would take. It's probably easier to steal/vandalise the current computer suites than it would be to do the same to one that is monitored (/pun :pac:)

There's a 24hr security team in the college anyway (although I'm sure they won't be happy at the prospect of actually having to do something).

Would be dead handy for students needing to work overnight on last minute projects who don't have laptops, or even people like me who own one but feel they do a lot more work when they're in college.

Could even stick a few rip off vending machines or something in there for more revenue.

This comes up every year. Along with the 24hour library etc, though that seems to have quietened down now given the extra couple of hours in the reading room...

Doesn't surprise me. Is there an argument against it? I can't imagine it's funding, seeing as they'll happily spend it on, say, replacing an open area of the canteen with 4 superfluous skylights.

I'm surprised it doesn't exist already, it would be dead handy to while away the hours if you can't sleep etc.

Went to Trinity years ago and they had them since before I even started (pre-2004).

I do all my best work in the wee hours. I would absolutely love an all night library. Suites are a good idea too, though not an issue for me personally as I have a laptop.

Frankly I'd like if every institution gave me the option of doing stuff at night.

Dunno... what happens when the drunken gob****es wander back from CPs etc. and decide to go in and trash the place?

But aye, I'd be in favour of one - I've spent plenty of nights in the office asleep/working/online - 'twould be nice if there were a couple of other lychnobites knocking around.

You only really get people walking from Wards down by the college bar and under the concourse (i.e. the route to Corrib). Just stick it out of the way a bit. And leave a poster of a girl and some shiny objects to distract the CPs clientèle.

Im the same. Nocturnal college work is awesome without the daytime distractions.

Well the 24 hour library would be easy. Sure just pay someone (maybe even 2) to do the extra hours on the entrance desk. That would also work to deter drunken students from going in to begin with. Apart from that I'm sure it would function as usual at night.

I can see the advantages of the 24 hour suite but being honest - if you make the library 24 hour - then just use the pc's in there at night and then there's none of this worry about a pc suite being wrecked in the early hours of the morning.

Probably the best way for this to happen would be for the Students Union to approach ISS about it and collaborate on it. Not sure who's the best bet in the SU, but maybe the Education Officer (Emmett Connolloy?) as he was the one who spearheaded the Facebook ban in the PC Suites.

Alternatively, you could contact ISS directly, but without SU/Faculty support, it may not advance much. The best person to contact there directly would be Evelyn Bohan (Desktop Services Manager) or Conor McMahon (Head of Service Delivery) the contact details for both are on the ISS website.

Does anyone in the SU post here? Maybe they could take some time out of organising the next mega lame College Bar theme event.

Rather than push for 24-hour PC suites, we should continue to push for a 24-hour library. The library doubles up as a PC suite.

agreed. i don't see the problem if they just had one or two staff there at night. if they even opened the library for 24 hours coming up to exam time, it'd be a real help. library does be too packed during the day to get a seat and sort through any books you want to take out or browse through. it'd be way easier at night

They could even employ some senior students and pay them less since students aren't full humans (the government agrees so there).
