Ipod Displays Red X

My ipod recently started displaying a big red X on the screen.
Underneath the X it gave the address for apple.com/support/ipod

When I followed the link, it told me that I had to a factory rest but first, I had to set it into disk mode.

But when I followed the steps it gave, to put it into disk mode, it didn't work.
The instructions it gave said to hold select and menu untill the apple logo appears, then hold select and play untill it goes into disk mode, and then connect it to pc.
But this isn't working beyond getting the apple logo on screen.

Furthermore, the ipod isn't appearing in the it itunes source bar.

    Anybody have any advice?
