Winter tyres - first drive under real wintery conditions

Been out earlier on some really bad side roads and I thought I'd post a little test report.

    - outstanding on loose / virgin snow. Accelerating, braking, bends ..no problems. Very impressive.

    - very sure footed on compacted snow. No wheelspin on acceleration, very good roadholding through bends, moderate braking gets handled competently. Stomping on the brake pedal results in a slide (no ABS) but traction is immediately regained once the brakes are off

DRIVING ON ICE (glazed and frozen over snow/slush): acceleration (with a gentle gas foot) is still very impressive. Lateral forces trough bends (at low speeds) better than expected. Slowing down through the gears works well, even lifting the gas abprubtly gets handled well. APPLYING FORCEFUL BRAKING HOWEVER RESULTS IN AN IMMEDIATE LOSS OF TRACTION / SLIDE (again no ABS on my car) Traction difficult to regain (the 4WD needed a dab of gas to regain traction)

CONCLUSION: Very impressive and a vast improvement over summer tyres ...but do not get cocky on ice, winter tyres can't work miracles either and braking on ice should be avoided even with winters

Good report there peasant! Nice to know they actually work! What brand are they by the way?

I think peasant you are using central European tyres and not Nordic ones.

Nordic tyres do give even better grip specially in ice, but still even those tyres that you have are way better than summer ones.

I hope I would have winter tyres as well but I think I try to manage with summer ones, even it is a pain, no grip what so ever.

I have C-rated van tyres, Vredestein Comtrac Winter (195/14 C), not car tyres

According to ADAC tests they are not full-on alpine tyres, but they do perform well in snow and ice as well as on wet or dry roads. ADAC recommended them as a good allrounder for normal winter driving.
